FYI: Like many people, I used to think the Middle East was a dangerous place. But the region is a massive 3.5 million square miles. Pockets of fear, like Syria and Iraq, make up a tiny fraction of the region. As I cycled along that path in Dubai, I began talking to another cyclist. He looked across at the rolling dunes. “We’re just so lucky to be here,” he said. “It’s one of the most beautiful places on Earth.” Beauty, of course, is in the eye of the beholder. But there’s no shortage of Americans who love living in the Middle East.
