Chicken Shortage Sends Prices Soaring, and Restaurants Can’t Keep Up - WSJ

Independent eateries and bars have gone weeks without wings, owners say. Chicken breast prices have more than doubled since the beginning of the year, and wing prices have hit records, according to market-research firm Urner Barry. “The overall supply is constrained. That affects every part of the bird,” Wingstop Chief Executive Charlie Morrison said in an interview earlier this week. Wingstop said it is paying 26% more for bone-in chicken wings this year ... One reason for the higher prices is the chicken sandwich wars of recent years.

  • Our golf club stopped "Wing Night", due to high prices and shortages.
  • Ought to try Beyond Meat burger. Quite tasty as a vegetarian burger and you don't f*** as much.
  • I just bought boneless breasts at Kroger’s and got a good deal on bulk. It was buy one get two free - at full price - but after the 2 free, a good deal.
  • Recent news suggests that part of the problem may be with Tyson's stud roosters - higher quality but lower volume offspring.

There's always Costco's loss leader $4.99 rotisserie chicken. Costco is large enough to raise its own chickens. But that comes with a dark side (opinion piece by Nicolas Kristof):
Many of us aren’t quite sure what rights animals should have, or how far to take this concern for animal well-being. We’re learning as we go, but most are willing to pay a bit more to avoid torturing animals, and that’s why fast-food restaurants make Better Chicken Commitments; it’s why Costco will eventually come around, too.

  • No shortages or price issues at our local supermarket for chicken thighs, legs, or breasts - they’ve got plenty at the typical sale prices. Haven’t paid much attention to wings since they tend to fly under our radar.
