What percent of 330M Americans would say yes....

...if asked "Do you want Transgender restrooms in all public facilities?"

@Ted - By responding to the initial post you succeeded in bumping it over to the "Discussions+" portion of the board where it's certain to receive a lot of attention. In the future, I suggest you simply flag objectionable posts using the link conveniently provided and state your reason so the monitors can take appropriate action/inaction.
I'll agree with you Ted, it's out of place here.

    Additional Rant:
The best monitoring is that which we impose upon ourselves as members of the community. For the most part I find the members here highly responsible. I don't mind the occassional off-topic item provided it isn't highly charged/divisive in nature.

@shippwreckedandalone: A sense of fair play would suggest that you include at least a brief reference in your caption to the topic you want discussed. That way folks can decide whether or not they even wish to click & read the contents.

  • I don't care if they have their own bathroom or not, but what would it look like? Isn't there 2 types of transgender, guys to girls and girls to guys? Urinals, no urinals? Does each type share the same one. This is a very complex issue. I'd actually like to hear what the presidential candidates think about this.

Ummm, that was all tongue-in-cheek for you more serious people out there.

I just wish that our political leadership would spend a little more time taking care of the important stuff and leaving this kind of stuff alone. Actually, I don't mind seeing the discussion, I just agree that this isn't a particularly relevant forum for it.

Just spent a couple days & nights in Charlotte NC (what a beautiful area). Happy to report that nobody (male, female or split-gender) attacked me while using the restrooms. Nor was I concerned they might.

While predators certainly exist, I can't see them going through the trouble of having a sex change or dressing in any particular way to commit their crimes. (Most wouldn't have the brains to come up with a suitable subterfuge anyway.)
  • OK, since we've been dragged into this, there's only two options here, right?

    1) Born female, dressed as male: Goes into male restroom, can't use urinals, does whatever in privacy of stall.

    2) Born male, dressed as female: Goes into female restroom, no urinals to use, does whatever in privacy of stall.

What the hell. Why should I care?

Hey - This is becoming a fun topic. :)

Since the law being contested is in North Carolina I feel eminently qualified to expound, having just returned from there.

What I did find objectionable was that at Charlotte Douglas Airport they have "attendants" in all the restrooms who greet you at the door and escort you to a stall. No kidding - you can't just walk in and choose your own place of contentment. They greet you when you arrive, direct you to a stall if you wish to sit, and than say stupid things afterward like "Now - Sir, Don't you feel better now that you've relieved yourself?" While you can still select your own urinal they're always watching. Additionally, they have a well-seeded cash tip tray by the door so you'll be certain to tip them generously when you leave.

I find the above somewhat more invasive of my privacy than the occassional frantic woman who rushes in to "borrow" one of the mens' stalls because the women's RR is crowded and she can't wait any longer, or the adult male who brings his 6 year old daughter in to use the mens' rest room because he's travelling alone with her and concerned about her safety. I'll also confess to having accidentally bumbled into the woman's restroom once or twice over the years at airports - only to say "Oops - Sorry" and turn around. (Suppose I should have been arrested.)

Geez - Whatever happened to common sense?
  • Well I'm going to get me a comfortable chair and move from rest room to rest room watching for trans people. I will write a book based on these observations, if any.

Anna - Why don't you just apply for a job at Charlotte airport? That way you can get paid while you watch. :)
  • Why don't they just use the same one they were using 6 months ago before this kerfuffle all started?

Good point Press. Do you suspect maybe somebody sensed a focal point here around which to arouse a significant portion of the population - even though there was no problem?

    From The Grapes of Wrath:

"Lead 'em around and around," said Joad. "Sling 'em in the irrigation ditch. Tell 'em they'll burn in hell if they don't think like you. What the hell you want to lead 'em someplace for? Jus' lead 'em."

As a woman, I find our attempt to frame the poly gender-toilet issue as a trans-phobic one and that you are taking the higher ground on it as insensitive and ill-informed. Colleges are attempting to do all they can to reduce sexual abuse. They are trying to use education, campus phones and other things. One out of five women will be sexually abused in college. Why is this being forgotten? Do people think that women are not sexually abused outside of colleges?

To gain entrance to a poly gender-toilet no one must "having a sex change or dressing in any particular way". If a person self-identifies as sex they can use the toilet of that sex. If a man self identifies as a women he can use the women's toilet. It all is in the person's mind. There is no objective determination. So, in practice any man can use the woman's toilet. If questioned all they have to say "I self-identify as a woman".

"(Most wouldn't have the brains to come up with a suitable subterfuge anyway.)" The 'brains' are out there in case you don't know ...

I hope you take the time to research this issue and do not dismiss it as a trans-phobic issue.

Do you think this issue is just about the rights of transgenders/self sex identifiers or do non-transgenders/non self sex identifiers have rights also?

    @Sandra/Dex

I stand (err ... maybe sit?) corrected.
  • The entire nation is fixated on irrelevant matters. Meanwhile, every man, woman and child (including those under 18 and over 80) owes $60k each in Federal Debt but no one gives a damn talking about it. The best investor known to mankind has bought a 30% allocation to gold. My fascination is for how long he holds it.
  • Dear ship..........
If that is your fascination, then why did you start this discussion with such a "irrevelant" question?
You're now on my no-read list.
But thanks for playing the game.
