Investors Pour Into EM ETFs To Close Q1

FYI: Friday is the last day of the first quarter, and one of the prominent themes of the first three months of 2017 has been the leadership displayed by emerging markets equities. With one trading day left in the quarter, the widely followed MSCI Emerging Markets Index is higher by almost 14 percent. Said another way, the combined gains of the S&P 500 and the MSCI EAFE Index do not equal that of the emerging markets benchmark.

  • As investors pour into EM's I got out in December. Maybe too early? I had decided once my position in ODMAX had broke even I was getting out and I did. Oh well...
  • My overweighing in EM equity has contributed nicely to the portfolio. Andrew Foster has done an excellent job.
  • Investors shouldn't shy away from emerging markets. The use of emerging small cap and domestic small cap value has produced highest alpha premia over a long sample ( as proven by academia ). Over history, emerging markets performances have "zigged" while the U.S. markets "zagged" ( ie. the average of both market universes performances have been higher than holding just U.S. exclusively ) Combined with quantitative tactical asset allocation strategy, an investor in their "accumulation" phase may 'maximize" asset growth. Later, the addition of mid cap growth and large value universes may provide more portfolio diversification during the deaccumulation and income phase.

  • PREMX is my EM bond fund. Delighted with it. My EM equity fund is Foster's SFGIX. But I'm only 7% in overseas equities of all sorts. Anyhow, no complaints.
