The Year Of The Dogs ?

FYI: At the start of each year, we like to highlight the 10 stocks that make up the "Dogs of the Dow" strategy. This "buy and hold" strategy says to simply buy the 10 highest yielding stocks in the Dow 30 at the start of the year, making changes when necessary on an annual basis. With today being the mid-way point of 2014, below is a look at how the "Dogs" strategy has performed so far this year.

  • The Dogs of the Dow was a very popular investing strategy in the 1990's. There were books and articles written about it, even mutual funds incorporating it. The major full service brokerages had Unit Investment Trusts with the 10 Dogs of the Dow, that would automatically rebalance into the new 10 Dogs of the Dow in the first week of January of each year.
