Simple Investment Return Calculators (for us "mathematically challenged")

edited September 2014 in Off-Topic
Might help someone weigh risks and benefits of investing in equities over longer time frames.

(1) This calculator allows you to calculate the return of the S&P over any period you select. In addition, you can select to show return in inflation adjusted (or non adjusted) dollars.

(2) "Rule of 72" Calculates how long it takes an investment to double in value a a given interest rate

(3) Historical Returns of the S&P 500 (Total and Inflation Adjusted)

Now, especially for some of we older farts here at the board.....inflation. The real challenge to investing, eh? My 97 y.o. M.I.L. and 89 y.o. mother know of and understand inflation.
I smile when I see a current Ford truck? ad helping the viewer feel better with announcing $7,000 plus in rebates, etc. I recall, with the wayback machine; when I worked for a short time at Generous Motors in my youth, when $7,000 would let one buy two very nice new cars. 'Course, the straight time hourly pay rate was $3.08/hour in 1966.:)
