Legg Mason: Primer On MLP's

FYI: Master limited partnerships (MLPs) have been around since 1981, when Apache Oil Company used the MLP structure to sidestep institutions and mutual funds, and raised capital from smaller investors by offering them a “partnership” investment in a liquid, marketable security. Since then, the number of MLPs has grown from just a handful to more than 100, and the total market capitalization of MLPs has grown from $4.2 billion in 1996 to more than $630 billion in 2013. Nevertheless, MLPs aren’t as well-known as they should be, according to Legg Mason, who says the asset class presents myriad opportunities, especially for individual investors.
