The exchange-traded fund industry is about to hit another milestone: Assets in U.S. ETFs are nearing $2 trillion. ETFs have become de rigueur for investors looking for low-cost, transparent access to the biggest, most established benchmarks. Some 75% of ETF assets are in funds tied to broad benchmarks from established index providers such as Standard & Poor’s, Russell Investments, MSCI, and others. But those funds don’t generate the marketing frenzy, the sales imperative, and let’s face it, the headlines that have heralded the rush to newer, smaller products.
