What are your thoughts on ICMAX. Do you have a feel for Mr. Wiggins yet? They seemed to have navigated 2011 fairly well, but is it too soon to buy in? I may start a little now in my IRA and average in over the year.

Also looking at ARTSX, FCPVX, and SSSFX, but is ICMAX a little better buy now that they just payed out the Div?

  • Not sure what the dividened distribution has to when you buy, if you are impressed with ICMAX return history, be aware that the manager who steered that funds great 2008,2009 performance left in 2010 to start his own fund, ARIVX.
  • Haven't followed Icmax since Eric C. left, or the other two funds on your list, but Artsx is kind of interesting - after a total manager shakeout in '09, a good team came in (largely as I understand it) from Artisan's pretty successful Mid Cap team.

If you're considering a growthy, 20+ P/E small cap fund like Artsx, you might add Prnhx, Price's New Horizons, to your research list. It's got a good, very long record, the recent manager change appears to be working out fine, low turnover, and a lower E.R. than Artsx. Prnhx also has a lot more assets under management, but it doesn't appear to be a huge problem there - one of their schticks is to hold onto stocks forever, even long after they've climbed into mid-cap space.
