The Closing Bell: Wall Street Gives Up Early Gains As Energy Weighs On Stocks

FYI: Stocks failed to take advantage of early gains and turned wobbly Tuesday as oil prices cratered, dragging the energy sector sharply lower, and a resolution of the U.S.-China trade war remained elusive.

Stocks had bounced back in the morning as large-capitalization technology and internet-related names appeared to have regained their footing after the Dow and the Nasdaq suffered triple-digit losses in the previous session.

Tech companies clawed back some of their losses, with Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices up 7.2% and 4.6%, respectively. Those stocks were still down 18% and 24% over the past month as tech stocks have led a broad market retreat.

Apple’s shares also rebounded, rising 0.9%, following a 5% drop Monday after two of its suppliers slashed their earnings outlooks, raising concerns about demand for its iPhone.

Stocks staged a modest comeback Tuesday before falling again. The Dow lost 0.4%, or 101 points, to close at 25,286.49, while the S&P 500 closed down 0.15% to 2722.18 and the Nasdaq was flat, closing at 7200.87. U.S. oil futures fell again after a brief Monday bounce. Here are a few more things to know:
