Thematic ETFs Are the Rage—Until They Fail

FYI: These have been heady times for so-called thematic ETFs, as investors have flocked to these funds that give them exposure to niche markets.

But for many of those funds, these have also been difficult times.

Net inflows into thematic equity exchange-traded funds this year in the U.S. are estimated at $3.48 billion through Nov. 30, according to research firm Morningstar Inc. In Europe, net inflows into thematic ETFs for the first 11 months of this year are estimated at $2.41 billion. Last year, a net $7.62 billion flowed into these funds in the U.S. and $2.8 billion in Europe.
