The Breakfast Briefing: Global Stocks Pause As U.S. Plots New Tariffs On EU

FYI: Global stocks wavered on Tuesday, after the Trump administration took a step toward imposing tariffs on imports from Europe.

The pan-continental Stoxx Europe 600 was up 0.1% in early trading, with a 0.2% increase for the index’s autos sector mostly balanced by a 0.3% slip in personal and household goods stocks.

Shares in Fiat-Chrysler fell 0.6% after court documents revealed the car maker will pay $110 million to settle a longstanding lawsuit alleging it misled U.S. investors regarding safety concerns and excess diesel emissions.

Quiet trading in Europe followed shallow gains in Asia, where both Japan’s Nikkei 225 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 0.2%.

U.S. futures put the S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq-100 on course to slip 0.1% at the open, in a move that would reverse the S&P 500’s small increase Monday.

Elsewhere, the British pound advanced 0.2% against the euro, with U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May set to travel to Berlin to meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the prospect of a long delay to Brexit as talks between Mrs. May’s government and Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour Party, continued.

In commodities, Brent crude oil was flat at $71.12 a barrel, remaining close to its highest level so far this year, amid rising supply fears in Libya.
