Oil-And-Gas ETFs Are Thriving

FYI: t has been a good year for exchange-traded funds focused on the oil-and-gas industry, though investors should be wary of potential pitfalls, analysts say.

There are many ETFs tracking the exploration-and-production sides of the oil-and-gas industry, investing in companies like Exxon Mobil Corp. XOM 0.62% and ConocoPhillips , COP 0.65% and most have had a strong 2019 so far. The largest ETF in the area—the $13.6 billion Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE)—is up more than 16%, as is the $3.7 billion Vanguard Energy ETF (VDE), the second-largest fund. The $1 billion iShares Global Energy ETF (IXC), from BlackRock Inc.’s iShares unit, is up almost 15% year to date.
