Two guys, trading threats over trade (Trump and Xi Jinping)

A short Op-Ed about the wild card that makes it difficult to predict how this dispute will wind up being resolved....
As President Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping escalate their trade talk bluster, it’s fair to ask: why can’t they just come to a common-sense compromise? The answer is as much about the two men and their personalities, as it is the millions of lives and the hundreds of billions of dollars at stake in their very visible showdown....The benefits of reaching a deal – any deal – are obvious to everyone, except the two men trying to ensure their place in history, at each other’s expense.

The whole world knows that the thing Donald most likes to flaunt is the red hot U.S. equity market - particularly the Dow Jones Industrial Average. IMHO that fixation is misplaced. It’s the longer term results that matter most to nations and to investors and not the daily, weekly or yearly gyrations.

Pray do tell me how this short-term fixation with market indexes puts him in an advantageous negotiating position when it comes to trade, geo-political rifts or anything else? Do you suppose by now foreign leaders know how to yank his string?
