1988: Dell Computer Corp., run by then-23-year-old college dropout Michael Dell, goes public on NASDAQ at an initial price of $8.50 per share.

1979: Watch out for that forklift! MB Associates, a company run by Bernard Marcus and Arthur Blank, opens three home-improvement outlets next to some Treasure Island stores in Atlanta. Today known as Home Depot, its one of the worlds largest retailing outfits.
