The Breakfast Briefing: Global Stocks Advance To Start The Week

FYI: Global stocks posted tepid advances on Monday, building on the prior week’s gains as investors awaited the outcome of a meeting between the U.S. and Chinese leaders at the G-20 summit over trade later this week.

The Stoxx Europe 600 gained 0.2% in opening trade, with most regional indexes higher, though Germany’s DAX was an exception, dropping 0.1% at the open.

Shares in auto maker Daimler dropped 3.5%, the worst in the pan-European index, after the company issued a profit warning. Meanwhile, German retailer Metro AG shares advanced 2.5% after the company received a takeover offer, which it rejected. France’s Carrefour was also up, by 2.5%, after it agreed to sell a stake in its Chinese business.

In Asia, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and Japan’s Nikkei both edged up 0.1% and stocks in Shanghai gained 0.2%, though shares in Shezhen slipped 0.1%.

Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.3%, while S&P 500 futures climbed 0.3%.

In currency markets, the Turkish lira jumped 1.7% against the U.S. dollar after an opposition candidate won a crucial ballot for Istanbul mayor on Sunday, exposing troubles in President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s long-dominant ruling party.

The WSJ Dollar Index, which measures the U.S. currency against a basket of its peers, slipped 0.1%.
