Equity v Bonds, 1 year. You kidd'in me? Nope

So, one may do the hypothetical and presume you came into $500k to invest equally into the 7 holdings in the chart. The investment choices are among those readily available and a few that have been discussed here. A 30/70, equity/bond mix would be the result, more or less; and indicates a fairly conservative portfolio postions. The chart contains: SPY, DSEEX, LQD, EDV, IEF, IOFIX and BAGIX ; showing total returns for 1 year, to date. No in and out buys/sells or market timing. The right end of the chart will provide a ballpark % return view; but you may hover the pointer/cursor on any graph line for the exact % return to date.

Equity versus bonds, 1 year chart, total returns

Well, anyway; just taking a view of a time frame and how things look for same. You may be somewhat surprised with the results.
