When Defensive Stocks Are No Longer The Best Defense: (XLRE) - (XLU) - (XLP)

FYI: he best offense has been a good defense. Is it time for investors to flip that maxim on its head?

Owning defensive stock sectors like utilities, real estate, and consumer staples has been a winning strategy over the past years as concerns about global growth have buffeted economically sensitive cyclical sectors. Real estate stocks, for instance, have returned 18.2% during the past 12 months, while utilities have returned 16.1%, and consumer staples have returned 12.6%. The S&P 500 has returned a meager 1.9% during the same period.

Still, the gains have been so big that it might be time to do the unthinkable: buy some cyclical stocks.

Ted
