Vanguard Institutional:The mutual fund graveyard - An analysis of dead funds

New research by Todd Schlanger and Christopher B. Philips, both of Vanguard Investment Strategy Group, demonstrates the importance of evaluating and accounting for closed mutual funds when analyzing fund-category performance.

The study finds that failure to consider such funds can artificially inflate the reporting of past performance and potentially bias expectations for fund results.
