I have been considering how weather helm is analogous to inflation. A little is good and necessary. The opposite of weather helm is lee helm and if you have never experienced it ,,,, it’s bad. The opposite of inflation is obviously deflation and if you have never experienced it, it’s bad. This will only make sense to a sailor.
@larryB , I have been sailing in earnest since 1974, along the way earning and using professionally a USCG license with sailing and towing addenda, but lost a lot of knowledge, skills and abilities when I changed careers 30 years ago.
Having also earned an MBA, I think your analogy is fair but perhaps a bit esoteric. Yet inflation can be manipulated by us humans whereas it is nothing personal when the weather cooperates or turns foul. Moreover, as I have little love for economics and much love for sailing, they likely will always remain totally separate in my thoughts.
@howaya. Thank for your comments. We started sailing in 1976 and just sold our last boat in 2024. I sometimes see investing through my sailors eyes. Our first dramatic experience with lee helm was at night off the west coast of Baja, California. We had just gone from a working jib to a storm jib( no furling back them) and didn’t rebalance. It felt like the rudder was no longer attached to the tiller. It was very disconcerting to say the least and I think that serious deflation would be a similar shock.
