Capital Group taking big stakes in Bitcoin Treasury companies

edited 9:33AM in Fund Discussions
It would be better if AF just bought BTC directly - even changing their investiment guidelines if necessary. Buying Strategy and other bitcoin treasury companies is just looking for trouble ... Saylor has insanely levered up his company by issuing preferred stock with insane yields just to turn around and buy more BTC, which I personally find reckless.

In the past four years, Casey and his firm have turned less than $1 billion into more than $6 billion with investments in Strategy and other so-called bitcoin treasury companies whose sole focuses are loading up on the cryptocurrency.

The firm spurned some past investing frenzies, such as the dot-com craze in the late 1990s, even as some clients clamored for those stocks. But it was early to the bitcoin craze, in large part due to Casey’s fervor.

This year, Casey and some colleagues also purchased 5% of Metaplanet, a Japanese hotel operator that last year began buying up bitcoin and counts Eric Trump as an adviser. That stock is up nearly 70% so far in 2025, though its shares have fallen about 39% in the past month. Capital Group also owns shares of Mara Holdings MARA, a bitcoin mining company that is down 2.74% this year.

The bitcoin investments are small relative to the firm’s assets but offer a powerful endorsement. Casey appears at bitcoin conferences and attended a New Year’s Eve party at Saylor’s home in Miami celebrating bitcoin topping $100,000.

I don't have major concerns here (yet) .. but I will be reviewing my fund holdings to see how much crypto exposure may sneak into it over time. If I grow uncomfortable, I can always adjust/sell.
  • I was also drafting a related post. May be the site managers/moderators merge the 2 threads.

  • most rational institutions do not want to be caught dead holding crypto, but eagerly want fees (paid in real dollars) on transactions , custody, nearly anything admin.
likewise, you will never catch the trump family outlaying their own cash to own crypto unless as an intermediary to a guaranteed larger payoff.

this pretty much explains a lot of the corporate donations\bribes\etc from traditional finance industry. others include those prison-related, such as justin sun.
  • Per M* here are the top holders of (Micro)Strategy. Several AF's are listed...

  • @yogubb and @rforno, Thanks for heads up. Will keep my eyes on few Capital Group ETFs we have. Always thought Capital group are cautious managers.
