Betting Against The $$$ Easier Said Than Done

Comments

  • It is not hard to bet against the dollar, with so many Local Currency funds available, and it is not hard emotionally if you think long-term debt will be problematic. But timing that bet is very hard, as so many have found in the last couple of years. The dollar remains the cleanest shirt in the dirty laundry of major world currencies. That may change, but even if it does, the dollar will likely remain a 'safe' place in times of crisis. Perhaps the best way to play currencies is with a fund where a smart manager can select what currencies the bonds will be bought, either dollar or non-dollar.

  • Hello,

There are two etfs that I know of that one can use to play the US Dollar against foreign currencies. UUP if your thoughts are that the dollar will strength and UDN if you feel the dollar will weaken.

I wish all ... "Good Investing."

Not sure why you think that. First, it is short term interest rates that affect currency and increasing rates makes the currency stronger so you wouldn't short short-term bonds to bet on declining currency. Second, TBT shorts long-term bonds which only have a weak correlation with currency.
