Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
@Scott
Yes, I believe you are correct.
August 17, 2011, the Board of Trustees of Nakoma Mutual Funds (the “Trust”) approved the reorganization of the Nakoma Absolute Return Fund (the “Nakoma Fund”), a series of the Trust, into the Schooner Global …
It is a pretty new fund. The other funds managed by schooner don't seem noteworthy. I like the idea of it, but this seems like they are over promising. With very few aum, it may be a while before it is a sustainable fund.
A few questions for Mr. Andrew Foster:
Where do you plan to go for your next Field Notes trip?
Would you consider adding a retail+ share class with a min of $50k and an e.r. in between your retail and institutional?
At the start of the fund, the…
@MourningStars and @Old_Joe It'd be good to hear Andrew Foster, but on their website it says:

The Fund has a broad geographical mandate, rather than an arbitrary one prescribed b…
A quote from the article by the manager of RSIVX and RPHYX:
“It’s an awful time to be an investment-grade bondholder,” David Sherman, founder of New York-based Cohanzick Management LLC, which manages $1.6 billion, said in a telephone interview.
I just listened to the podcast and it was a nice discussion. Mr Schaja was a bit heavy on the "marketing" for my taste. It was disappointing to hear that there are only two people dedicated to the fund full time and the rest of the team are the ot…
Thanks for all the great contributions. I've used the MFO risk tool to compare. I've restricted it to funds in the 1st risk group to approximate the risk category of RPHYX and organized them according to Martin Ratio. For the 3 year group, RPHYX …
ZEOIX is an interesting alternative to the Shermanator and his money good securities. David did a profile of it last July.

You could go with FLTMX or @Ted might remind you about PFF. I think RPHYX is fine though. Why are you looking for an alternative? If you are looking to limit tax liabilities, there are plenty of muni options.
@crash be careful what you wish for. I live in Scandinavia and there is no comparison. I can't wait to get home. The government incentives drive people to do strange things. Why, just this week I found myself staring in disbelief when the locals…
Balanced funds or allocation funds are different from long short funds. That's not to say that they aren't exactly what you are looking for, though. Maybe we won't have to worry about bonds in a rising rate environment, yet. But my time line is me…
You could try RSAFX or FMLSX or HFXIX or BRBPX. They are each a bit different animals, but all have more volatility than bonds. RSAFX may be the most conservative of this bunch, albeit in a short track record during a bull market. GABCX acts more…
There are lots of options. Are you looking for munis or just taxable. Some cef's may fit the bill also. Check out http://www.cefconnect.com

Fidelity had gotten better and will recommend three to five funds with better returns that are available at fido when you search for a fund. They are not ranked, but are sorted by the three year returns. See the similar funds on the right hand sid…
I always compare PVFIX to ICMAX and ARIVX. But PVFIX has handily beat them both since 2012. ARIVX beat them both in 2011 by 6 and 10 percentage points respectively. ICMAX beat PVFIX in 2010.
@Scott I think I've got you beat for the youngest. By some measures I am a millennial! Am I the only one? I am sure there at least a few more of us. It depends where you make your cutoff. By some studies I am part of gen x. Last generation born…
My wife likes diamonds.
Really she owes a debt of gratitude to @Rono. He convinced me to look at fine jewelry as a real asset (with some investment or insurance value) and it helps keep me out of the dog house. Otherwise I would still consider je…
Here's some advice from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission about how to choose a mutual fund:
As with any investment, a fund's past performance is no guarantee of its future success.

There are a few CEF's on the London AIM exchange, but it looks like they haven't been run well (large discount due to poor earnings and risky assets). Forex is also a headwind. Operations are proving too costly and there are some legal issues. I …

I bought MACSX when Foster was there and stayed with it. I have always wanted to trade the position for SFGIX, but the absolute returns and risk of MACSX haven't given me any reason to leave. SFGIX has a wider reach and a much lower aum, but last …
I am not excited about this. They didn't do this to try to help the little guy. I think asset bloat is on the way. The reasons for the sale (from their press release):
- $27 billion in assets under management and advisement and more than 250 pro…
