Hi Scott,
Can you elaborate on your horrible experience with HR?
I've had issues with Turbotax in the past with mistakes in the handling of K-1's and foreign income, but nothing I couldn't over-ride. I assumed HR would be similar.
Basically, I …
I'm fascinated by the whole oil situation. With almost any other product, anti-dumping, anti-trust, restraint-of-trade and other regulations try to prevent any company or group of companies from cornering a market to the extent that they can drive p…
Thanks Scott.
In its defense, can't we argue that the non - GAAP are more indicative of future cash flows?
Unless, as ZH suggests, this engineering is something we can expect regularly.

It's not against Alcoa, which is a fine company and the n…
I had read that Alcoa's earnings were off. Sometimes the markets develop this skittish behavior and yes, over analyzing things tends to exacerbate the process. Funny thing is, what exactly has changed ?
Well, yeah, there was financial engineering i…
Ugly action for sure.
You gotta give some credit to AA's order book, no?
Not 200 points, no.
I did do some buying this afternoon when the market was down over a hundred.
Thanks for that info @scott. It seems there is not one single event that…
Just waking up here. According to CNBC, a lot of the reversal happened in roughly a one hour timeframe. Computers or a big sell?
I'd say it happened in a 15-30 minute time frame. Was very quick.
Why was the market even +200 in the first place? Seems to be coming back towards even as oil goes positive for the day. (edited to add: ..and mkt goes positive.)
I think the remarkable issue is that the story seemed to be flipped after around the Samsung Galaxy S4 or 5, which didn't meet expectations critically or commercially. The ball was in Samsung's court, then it flipped back to Apple.
The other issue …
TAX those Rich guys...they don't need the money...Democratic Rally cry....now to forever
LOL, watch what we say not what we do. Say that, then cater to them like there's no tomorrow.
@MFO Members; johnN has come up with an excellent MLP paying a 6% + dividend, I like it. Energy Transfer Partners (ETP)
Owns natural gas gathering faculties, pipelines, and storage and processing facilities in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Louis…
Not a good idea. While this is in other countries, it's really not something that I would want. I'm sure, however, the Wall St lobby will take care of this.
People love AT & T as a dividend stock. I believe the dividend increases have been slowing a little in recent years and I hate that industry, which is one big price war. There are some positives on the horizon, but I'm not seeing the same appeal.
I'm not buying as I think REITs are over (or at least richly) valued here. If you want to start a position, I'd really average in over a longer period. Energy is certainly a cheaper option, but in terms of buying what has done well, that is real est…
I continue to like RIMIX, a fund no one's ever heard of. Yes, ER is a little high and not income oriented, but not a bad track record. Still own MSMLX and MACSX.
A couple of thoughts:
1. Buy only what you would be willing to hold if the market closed for 10 years. Or even 5. That's really not a bad way to really filter down to what you consider your best ideas.
2. Buy at a reasonable price. Maybe you don't…
I don't think so either. Those days are long gone. This price collapse is not a normal market reaction. There is some exterior fooling around here. How it will end is subject to opinions like Gundlach and Cramer. We are just in for the ride, good or…
@Scott: ecco
There were some other brands there for $400+ (more in your league:)
LOL, I'm the person who buys "last year's model" or "that color that didn't turn out to be as popular as we'd hoped" K-Swiss (love K-Swiss, for some reason there alway…
@MFO Members: Successful mutual fund investing is a marathon not a sprint ! Hope we don't have another repeat of this today.
Regards,
Ted
It's a mentality shaped by a market that has gone up constantly for a while now. Declines are met with, effec…
"I recall gold loosing about 70% of its value during an entire decade. Everybody said that was because the metal is so highly speculative."
Or perhaps because raising the interest rates into the double digits created a complete washout, then gold …
What's are deep value investors buying as a result of these deep value opportunities?
Or I could buy Oaktree (OAK), Blackstone (BX) or other private equity investors who have been buying up distressed bonds and other energy assets. Oaktree did not…
Commodity stocks in Australia getting whacked. BHP Billiton down over 5% at the moment. The others are not much better.
BHP not that far from 2008 low. If you think they don't cut the dividend and have a long (and potentially loonnnnggg) time horiz…
Just a few thoughts:
We have heard / read about the hoards of cash that Corporate America has been holding. What better way to hedge input costs than by investing some of this cash into oversold commodities.
In a world of printable weakening cur…
GILD working out okay after adding to that when it dropped 20% in a matter of a couple of days. Added BNS. May look at CIOXY and ABEV although I think Brazil unfortunately remains something of a mess. May look at DEO again.
(Shrug.)
I think the market's in a place where there are sectors that are more noticeably undervalued (energy), a good deal that's probably around fair value and some that are overvalued (consumer staples, for example - plus, REITs concern me a bit…
@Scoot - O & OHI are my long term holdings (years). They just keep rolling along and I'm not inclined to add to them at current prices like you. I may end up deciding to give Motif investing a whirl by building a REIT motif but right now there a…
I'm in no rush so I am mostly just pondering: FEU as discussed in another thread mostly for the dividend, PML a muni bond fund, OAK and a REIT or two-three which I am still performing dd on (STWD, WPC, BRX, STAG). If the REIT's and healthcare take a…
Those with oracle-like powers may wish to offer a prediction here. On December 1, 2015, will the price of WTI be closer to: (1) $40 (2) $60 (3) $80 ?
* It's nice to see David get the recognition. He always makes a great deal of sense to me.

"9. A couple of times per decade, investors forget that recessions happen a couple of times per decade. "
People wanted to forget any lessons from 2008 early in 2009 and just wanted to reboot things to a few years prior ASAP.
Rather than trying to…
Thanks for sharing your story and sorry to hear about your uncle. It's very disappointing and sad that what is effectively sort of a "middle man" in the situation can determine what medicines can be provided. Gilead's medicine is expensive, but I'd …
And AIG, Fannie, Freddie...there's still hope. I know.
My point is that it's always easier after the fact to say a blue chip like company is not going to fail.
D&C bought Wachovia all the way down I believe. Do you think they were properly ass…
