Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
I don't want to get into a political discussion because it gets into shouting on this board quickly, but personally, I just don't see any difference. Republican or democrat, still won't get anything of substance done and will spend more time playin…
Oy vey. So much financial engineering. So much absurdity. If Fairholme and Lampert love Sears so much, take the thing private already and stop all the nonsense. Short sellers will be back because they know Christmas isn't going to be any better beca…
OAK hammered today on earnings disappointment.
Almost KKR as well. But not quite yet. I've grown concerned that they will not be able to maintain dividend at current yield. And when they announce that...all hell will break lose.
OAK was a little di…

And it won't stop. Would not be surprised if market went down as it did after QE1, QE2 and QE3 (or 2.5 or whatever you want to call it). The other day you had two Fed governors come out and talk about QE4 with the market down only 7-8%.
Basically, …
@Scott, you're out of TRAMX because?
Moderate concerns over EM and the view (and I'm willing to be wrong) that ME/Africa equities are a bit overvalued. Also, felt the need to take risk down a little and shifted it to other things.
I may wind up be…
You have had a few incidents this year on CNBC. There was a real unpleasant one a month or two ago where Bill Fleckenstein got absolutely furious at another CNBC anchor.

Close watch list: BRK, PCP, MKL, KKR, BA, XOM, OXY, HES, AIG, APA, AMZN.
If you get HES, maybe hold for the MLP spin-off?

I missed the private equity part. Still, this sector has been performing very well and there are a number of funds that one could invest in to participate. I hold ARYVX as one example.
I also own BPY (another MLP, so it does result in a K-1), whi…
Long BX (which is rather volatile, as are most private equity stocks), which will spin off the advisory business next year.

What is an advantage in having HQL as compared to ETFs and mutual funds? It does not seem to perform as well as FBIOX and FSPHX.
I continue to like the yield and the ability to participate to a significant degree in private equity.
Seems like a good quarter, maybe worries about Asian demand and continued negative industry sentiment? Pays a good dividend, although inconsistent perhaps, given the fluctuations of the industry. I guess it becomes the question of why did you buy it…
@Ted,
The beacon system is being used for the World Series at each stadium. A trial run so to speak.
One good benefit out of all of this would be the reduction of junk mail.
The beacon system is really quite appealing in a number of regards, bu…
Rite Aid/CVS are part of MCX. CurrentC, the competing system by MCX (Merchant Customer Exchange) is really a poor alternative that shows tremendous disregard for the customer - as bad as it initially sounded to me, there are a few things now coming …

Moving forward:consumers need food, health , staple goods and communication services no matter what the economy brings.
I'm the same way. Focus on needs over wants.
I agree shareholders would like to see some visibility here. Also I keep reading stories how Amazons retail operations are having troubles with increasing fake and counterfeit items. The Chinese are getting better at it. It has become more like EBa…
Amazon wants to dominate (and go after the grocery market now, as well) and whenever it gets to that point - and who knows where the flexible goalposts are currently placed in regards to that goal - it can raise prices as it pleases. They've also ma…

It all depends on the story in NYC that happened this afternoon. If that turns out okay, then the market will end the week higher.
Earnings are mostly at least okay.

I agree@scott, the restaurant business is a tough one. Most don't last the first year.

Personally, I've noticed some comments about the threads I occasionally do before this thread and it kind of gets to a point where it's certainly not upsetting but a little surprising and kinda "well, fine, that's not something that has to be done".…
