Well thanks for all your great instruction and telling me about it.
Howdy folks,
I still feel that everyone should have 5-10 of their wealth in the metals in some manner - preferably hands on physical bullion.
and so it goes,
peace,
rono
Regarding hands on physical bullion......where are people going to keep …
It's nice that Vanguard is owned by the those invested in its funds. Very unique. You're not getting ripped off by undeservedly high expense ratios. Perhaps a few outfits deserve their higher expense ratios, but not very many.
Vanguard is well deserving of that money. They stepped up to the plate with 0.05% expense ratios with some stock index funds, and for that the deserve a lot. Their expense ratios whether in stock or bond index funds, and even active funds, are so …

I don't own it, but here's some comments:
Unexpectedly, Alan Greenspan has very recently commented on gold as an investment:

"That the price of gold is headed "measurably higher."

My understanding of the ipo issue with CEFs: There are costs to bring a new closed end fund to the market. Those costs are borne by those who purchase the initial public offering. When I looked into it years ago, those costs averaged approx. 5%. …
Once again thank you David, Charles, and everyone who works hard every month to bring us an informative commentary.
David, Charles, Ed: THANK you, once again.
David, Charles, Ed: Thanks for all that you do
Well, you were right on Washington Mutual. I've been happy with D&C and have most of their funds, and thinking that I can hold "forever" is a big part of that satisfaction. I probably should investigate their new Global Bond fund. You seem ex…
thanks msf.
I think even more significant and revealing is this part that Warren Buffett said. Where he gives his advice for the average person. I'm much more interested in what he advises for the average person than his wife's situation, beca…
"Maybe this bodes well for AKREX, since M* is showing that 2 of the analysts are now portfolio managers along with Chuck Akre". Yeah, I believe that's his way of making sure the new group has a stake in the firm. If I recall correctly, the former …
OK, here's the S&P 500 included.
Maybe this bodes well for AKREX, since M* is showing that 2 of the analysts are now portfolio managers along with Chuck Akre
Here's a performance comparison of the 2 funds:
Seems like his former analysts have not done too badly. I should have included the S&P 500 with this. Maybe I can add it
Marty Whitman was managing well into his 80's. With this in mind, I could have yet another decade to enjoy Mr Akre's expertise. I hope his new charges are learning well, but just like his old trio, the students are seldom as good as the teacher. …
He looks at the index as a guaranteed win on the future of America.
Thirdly, I think he believes (as do I) that long term, it's going to be harder and harder to compete against the index. It's by no means impossible. If he felt that it was a fru…
I believe Mr Akre is in his early 70's at this point. To my knowledge he hasn't mentioned any plans to step down.
That's good. He does a great job for shareholders and I hope he continues as manager for a very long time. You're lucky you've bee…
The manager is old...... Now he HAS to teach his co-managers to run the fund. I'm not so certain about manager succession plans at AKREX.
I have some of the same concerns for Mr Akre
Just how old is he, and has he stated that he doesn't plan t…
If Buffett were really a indexer at his core, he's be doing the same with Berkshire portfolio.
It's quite interesting that Buffett in his will, has arranged that his wife's portfolio will be 90% S&P 500 index fund and 10% short term gov't bond…
Frankly I just sold AKREX. I wish everyone in this fund the best. It has been a good ride for me but I cleaned up and put money in SEEDX.
@VintageFreak, Why did you sell it?
Good points bee, fundalarm, scott.
I just posted this in another thread. Wonder if anyone has a comment:

How is anyone going to be a successful investor in gold?
Gold peaked at $875/ounce in January 1980. So there was a major run up till that point and people did extremely well.

I've never set a stop loss. Maybe I should have, who knows, but I recall Peter Lynch in one of his books said he didn't like them, because the normal, expected volatility in stocks was so high, there is a very good chance your stock will go down en…
I wonder whether many investors will move to ETFs from their funds in taxable accounts after being hit by large taxable distributions this year, or at least send their new money to ETFs from now on.
I think more investors will move either to traditi…

I actually like frequent CNBC contributor Dennis Gartman less than I do Cramer.
Gartman's two calls for stocks to move lower over the past few weeks have been the moment the markets reversed.

Screenshot of FAIRX holdings, showing the +8.7% figure, error by M*
I just called M* and let them know about the data error. I suspect they will have this corrected soon.
Regarding the big difference between the closing price of SHLD on 12/31/…
And with that action today, SHLD becomes the leader of the FAIRX portfolio YTD at +8.6%.
I believe you got this figure from M* and their "Holdings" tab.
However, I don't believe M* is correct when they list SHLD as being +8.6% YTD.
SHLD closed on 12…
Wintergreen Fund's recent performance has been particularly poor. Was it the European equities (Swatch?) that caused the problem?
