  • Looks similar to JHQAX @hank. Investing in equities but a sleep well fund. Generally true, but not today. JHQAX lost 1.65%! More than the Dow, the S&P or the NASDQ. Quite an unusual performance for a hedged fund. Fred
  • Sorry, but based on test trades, GQEPX is not available at Fidelity, and GQEIX has a $500,000 minimum initial purchase requirement. Fred
  • Think you'll find the same fee at Fidelity. Sorry, but I don't see that PMEFX is even available at Fidelity. Did you find it at Fidelity with a different ticker? Fred
  • In the current market environment, preserving capital is more important than seeking return on capital. Fred
  • I am seriously considering moving some if not all of my position in TMSRX to PMEFX. FYI, co-manager Mark Saylor left the fund in October. Apparently, the fund is only available directly from Penn Mutual. Fred

  • Given the limited number of other VG AA funds available, would you attempt to suggest (1) any non-VG AA funds and if so, what would they be My suggestion would be to check out FMSDX, a Great Owl fund with an excellent risk/reward profile that …

  • As a disclaimer, I currently have a very moderate position in COTZX and appreciate the clear mechanics of adjusting to market conditions based on S&P levels. Still, I am challenged to add to it for the following reasons and considering selling i…
  • What is going on here? The topic of this thread is "Chartwell Funds to become part of Carillion Funds". Some of you are obviously hijacking this thread to discuss a totally irrelevant topic. Please show some courtesy towards the OP and start your o…
  • Former owners of Berwyn funds became owners of Chartwell funds in 2018, and now will become owners of Carillion Chartwell funds. Wasn’t it vice versa? Chartwell bought Killen Asset Management, the owners of Berwyn Funds, and then proceeded to tota…
  • Also JHDAX and JHTAX remain open, but I have no idea how they compare with JHDAX . carew, I assume you meant to say: "how they compare with JHQAX." Hopefully, the excerpt below from the M* Fund Analysis report of 9/2/2021 by Erol Alitovsky will b…
  • Upon my search of MFO site, I am surprised to learn only four posters (incl @carew388 & MikeM2) indicated owning this fund. I would have thought it would have a wider ownership among MFO posters. I own it. Happy. I also own JHQAX for quite …
  • Thanks, guys. Good discussion, very educational, too. While I don't own nor plan to buy BAMBX or TMSRX, I will put BAMBX on my watchlist for future reference. Certainly BAMBX's performance since the new team took over is quite good, especially impr…
  • FYI: For those who don't have a subscription to Barron's, here is the link to the complete fund profile of BAMBX that was written by Lewis Braham and published in November of 2020: https://webreprints.djreprints.com/57836.pdf Fred
  • So you're going to put your monies into something like that based on one day's performance? [...] Your money, do with it what you feel is best for you. This fund is not for me. Been burned by iqdax,. Learning my lesson. I wish you good investing…
  • However, yesterday, when all the major indices lost more than 2%, I couldn't help but notice that BAMBX was up 0.2%, and YTD the fund is up a nice 4.3%. Also, three and five year total returns are a pleasing 5.7% and 5.5%, respectively. Maybe it's …
  • Several months ago, a poster on another forum made the following observation about FMSDX: "With value equities and junk fixed income be prepared to take a hit with this fund if the equity / credit markets turn south [...]" That was apparent yest…
  • However, if you are a conservative investor looking for a low risk floating rate fund you may want to check out MWFRX/MWFLX. It's standard deviation is 6.2%, according to M*, and during the market crash in March 2020 it lost "only" 8.35%, whereas RS…
  • Check out WBALX for a solid 30%- 50% alloc fund. I did quickly, and while the equity part of WBALX may be "solid", I question the performance of the bond portion in the current rising interest rate environment. It makes up 42% of the fund's portfol…

  • Just to round out the picture, in addition to the reasons I already mentioned, OSTIX is also a good fit for my portfolio since I wanted a fund to complement my other bond funds. RCTIX, for example, is heavily concentrated in securitized issues. OST…
  • MAV123 asked: "Which Mutual Funds do you see as the potential for holding if we are about to enter a rising interest rate environment (bond/stock) ?" With respect to bond OEFs, I would definitely check out CLMAX. I has a history of performing well…
  • Hi, msf: Taking a quick look at MWFSX, I couldn't help but notice that M* reports a rather suspiciously high SEC yield of 8.55%! Just curious how that is possible in today's low interest rate environment? Certainly raises a red flag for me. Fred
  • Currently, due to high equity valuations, my portfolio's limited equity exposure is confined to these three defensive funds: CTFAX, JHQAX and VWINX. For the bond portion I use CLMAX, NVHAX and RCTIX, along with the bond-like alternative fund ARBIX. …
  • I finally decided to buy shares in CLMAX yesterday. However, if you think that interest rates may go down, better stay away. Fred
  • CLMAX can't be all that bad if it's on MFO's Honor Roll, and M* awards the fund its highest rating: five stars. Fred
  • I have some cash sitting on the sideline looking for a home. CLMAX has been on my watch list for a while as a fund that actively, and mostly successfully, tries to manage interest rate risk. If, as the Schwab outlook states, 10-year Treasury yields …
  • Unfortunately, the long list of bond funds that johnN posted are apparently all high yield funds. Using the best 15-year returns is not exactly very helpful if you want to have some diversity in the bond funds you select for your portfolio. Fred
  • FYI, below is the response I received from M* regarding my above OP: Hi Fred, Hope you are doing well! Please make a note that we have received a response from our team as mentioned below. The weak management team refers to the team managing the…
  • Hi Mac, good to hear from you. So far, RCTIX has met my expectations with a successful and steady risk adjusted performance, especially in this rather difficult interest rate environment. It has a solid asset management firm behind it with a manage…
  • Thanks , Lynn, appreciate your comment on TMSRX. As a retired and somewhat conservative investor, I am also "mixing and matching to have a consistent performance over time" by using the following funds in my portfolio which M* classifies as "Low" o…
  • TMSRX's total returns have been a real disappointment so far this year: 1 Week = -0.4% 1 Month = -1.2% 3 Months = 0.1% YTD = 0.4% Just an observation, but the fund will stay on my watch list in the hopes that its performance will eventually show …
  • FYI and FWIW, below are excerpts from a somewhat confusing, at least to me, recent M* Quantitative Analysis Report. On the one hand, M* claims that HMEZX has "a weak portfolio-management team" but, on the other hand, it also states that a "sign of…
  • As a conservative and a retired investor, I want some exposure to equities in my portfolio and was recently looking at balanced funds with a M* risk rating of "Below Average" and a standard deviation of < 8 or 9%. Two highly rated funds stood …
  • Unfortunately, trading of JASSX at Fidelity did not resume today as promised. Apparently, Fidelity is awaiting data from the fund company regarding the re-organization. The Fidelity representative said he reached out to the fund company but was unab…
  • Spoke to a Fidelity representative this morning and was informed that for JASSX, for example, the share class will be changed today from "S" to "R6" , but the fund symbol will not change. He had no information as to whether or not the expense ratio …
  • FYI, poster perrywinkle from the Armchairinvesting forum provided this very helpful piece of information that, hopefully, may clarify the issue at Fidelity: "Some searching of SEC filings shows that there was a reorganization that takes effect Mond…
  • I am holding the fund through the Fidelity Funds Network, purchased about three weeks ago. Considered buying additional shares and got the messages I reported in my original post above. Fred
  • But why, in a sea of red ink, is a RCTIX, multisector bond fund, up 0.73% today? Anybody have clue? Thanks, Fred
  • FYI, here are some optimistic market observations from an article in yesterday's WSJ. Here are some excerpts: "Shares of small companies and sectors of the market like financials and energy notched strong gains, while the broader stock market's mov…
  • Here is what David Giroux, the wunderkind manager of one of the best asset allocation funds, PRWCX, said in a recent M* interview about rising interest rates and duration: "So, now, everybody's convinced the yields are going to go up 1% to 2%, but …
