Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
I think Musk is closer to Howard Hughes than Davinci or Edison. But so what?
What is the case for investing in Tesla? No matter how thin you slice it, it's still just a car company selling a consumer durable run by a guy that can't stop talking.

About half my wife's retirement portfolio is at at TIAA from two different institutions. About 33% is in their "traditional" accounts, or whatever they call them. I moved most of the rest to money markets back in June. But I know that isn't a sensib…
hi @BaluBalu. It's an ongoing evaluation. There are plenty more things in the IRA to sell before I get around to XMHQ. I killed a lot of flowers and fed a lot weeds when I rebalanced in November 2021. I might just keep it.
Just ran one of my screen…
I’ve been looking at mid-caps and I came across XMHQ, a promising candidate. When researching the « quality » factor for this fund, I found the following description:
The Invesco S&P MidCap Quality ETF (Fund) is based on the S&P MidCap 400 …
Sold TCREX today. Maybe it will go up some more. But that will be without me. It didn't act as an inflation hedge. And I'm leery of what will happen to real estate after Santa is back at the North Pole.
Proceeds will likely go into IYK, maybe a lit…
Why?
Inker's marketing wryly amuses me. I'm amused he thinks quality is anomalous. I'm amused when he compares stocks to battleships. I'm amused he can't find paragraph breaks. My amusement is not worth beating to death with semantics.
Maybe some…
As GMO launches its first ETF, it seemed like a good time to share my thoughts on the market inefficiency that the strategy seeks to exploit – the quality anomaly.
Thanks @Mark. But what are those "quantitative and fundamental techniques" that sets QLTY apart from FUQIX or QUAL-- just to mention two large blend funds that have quality in their name.
As of this morning, I find 54 US equity funds in the MFO pr…
Interesting concept... good junk vs junky junk. Of course I poke fun here, but there actually may just be something to that.
Do any fund managers claim to be looking for the cra . . . crummiest assets they can find?
If you were going to have one permanent bias
Interesting choice of words.
And how does one define quality in equities and bonds? Is it the way we understand pornography, we know it when we see it? :)
T Rowe Price has posted more information about PRCFX on its website. Although detailed holdings are not yet available, the asset allocation is posted. Currently, it’s holding 51% in domestic bonds, 40% in domestic stocks, 5% cash, 4% foreign bonds a…
I don't know about Baseball_Fan, but I try to avoid funds with more than a token appearance of Amazon due to their labor history, among other factors. If it shows up in an ESG fund @ 5% I just laugh, and keep on moving.
@Mark,
Isn't it possible tha…
@Baseball_Fan, excellent points on the portfolios of many "ESG" funds. They're shaky on the E, and often cra crummy on the S and G.
Sure, BIAWX had a good year. But you're paying 79 cents for the same old stuff that has created a good year for lot…
@MikeM, not trying to be critical, just exercising my curiosity, and my weird sense of humor.
And I agree with you about putting cash back to work that was formerly invested.
But I wouldn't buy something I haven't looked at. My grandfather would…
Let's look at the possible investing thesis. Let's take our AI overlords at their word that they will be "water positive" by 2030. And then refer back to Mackintosh's thesis about environmental investing. ISTM that we are talking about large levels …
See my second link above for more detail. Some of it does go back, as industrial waste water.
This is just one example of the E in ESG being about more than what kind of light bulb you are using.
If your main goal is winning an argument, define the thing you want to beat to suit your argument.
James Mackintosh sounds like an able representative of the Journal's long-standing point of view.
On the news side of the financial press . . . Whe…
@Old_Joe, it has been very hard for our family socially as well. Through careful practice (mask and hygiene), our college kids manage not to get inflicted, while many of their colleagues were not as fortunate. We return to work since then but stay…
There's no shortage of etf's advertising their momentum strategies.
With 34 ETFs traded on the U.S. markets, Momentum ETFs have total assets under management of $16.43B. The average expense ratio is 0.60%. Momentum ETFs can be found in the following…
I searched but there is no small-cap GARP ETF yet. I found only SC-gr, SC-value, SC-quality, etc.
As @WABAC noted, even MC 600 GARP GRPM is new - Invesco/VZ switched from equal-weigh to GARP only in August 2023. However, M* analysis is dated Octobe…
It is a valid strategy and the term was popular for a while.
Now, there are 2 ETFs with GARP in their names - SP500 GARP SPGP and SP MC 400 GARP GRPM. Of course the ERs are higher than the regular SP500 or SP MC 400 funds.
GRPM was an equal-weight…
Don't know GARP. I bought SPGP for the taxable in early June after running it through MFO premium and PV. It has held up pretty well through the ups and downs since.
Long-term performance has been pretty good versus S&P. But I think we're in a…
I can't wait to get rid of it.
It was originally focused on companies that have a good work place. At that time it was the Endeavor fund. It morphed into a value fund as Dodson plotted his departure.
PRBLX has also experienced some serious style …
He won't shut up. He cusses at advertisers. The people most inclined to buy his products don't like his shtick. And the folks that like his shtick aren't likely to buy his products. I do my best to avoid funds that include more than a token amount o…
