Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
Thanks for the additional remarks @LewisBraham. Was just waiting for a chance to share your recent piece. Agree there are substantial differences.
For a long while James Stack has been recommending around 10% in a low cost inverse bear fund and …
Here’s the picture @Derf referenced from the article by Charles Boccadoro.
Giroux maintains a 3-5 year investment horizon. Takes a leap of faith for some of us to think that far out. So Giroux has an advantage over many of us. It’s not his money. …
What is negative with EPD? Something to do with the fund?
- EPD the stock is a limited partnership with energy holdings and it is positive for the year.
- Since your question refers to “fund”, most likely you mean EPDIX, the mutual fund, which in…
I continue to own stocks. :)
My earlier pessimistic summation was an attempt to identify Dimon’s perceived “hurricane”. (What was he thinking about?) Were Sir John Templeton still alive I believe he’d eloquently make the contrary case by pai…
Jamie always sounds to me like he’s got half a toot on. Not that I’d hold it against him. Wondering if comment was made before or after lunch? In the town I grew up in the local bankers were the worst of the lot. Rarely blew a sober breath after lu…
”Generally I’d stay away from funds so labeled or named. Strategies vary and they can be a lot riskier than the name implies.”
@Mark - It’s not for me to tell people what they should or should not invest in. I was simply sharing my own personal vie…
@ Old -Joe. SCHD has a track record that goes back to 2011 if I am not mistaken. Not the oldest ETF out there but no longer brand new.
Maybe it replaced Schwab’s older income generation behemoth?

Generally I’d stay away from funds so labeled or named. Strategies vary and they can be a lot riskier than the name implies. One possible exception (perhaps not a “pure play” on that category) is VWINX. It is consistently praised by board members.
If you lived through it you know what it is. This is not it. The term was coined at the time to describe a uniquely troubled economic landscape.
Not to beg the question @Sven asks, which is a good one. For what I suspect lies ahead …..

Abbot uses the same reasoning dated back to 1999 Columbine high school shooting - metal health.

Prices will vary of course. But a Kindle subscription to Barron’s is currently $12.49 per month.

Sick dudes will happen. There’s a report the grandmother worked for the school district. Explains (to me anyway) why his deranged mind zeroed in on that unfortunate target. I’m not qualified to explain further.

@JD_co
Sorry. I was merely reacting to the numbers on the chart and not to any particular poster. However, I do think you’ve nailed it on the head with the accompanying commentary which I should have paid better attention to.

Dropped another 7% today. I like to bottom feed, but passed this one up. Too much garbage thrown in. Thanks all for the informative posts on the subject.

Took a long hard look at ARRK (down 56% YTD) and decided I agree with Ralph Nader - “Unsafe at any speed.”
Those “hot-rod” holdings ranging from Tesla to Coinbase just don’t make any sense to me. Some I’d not mind owning. But not the entire lot. A …
The best cure for RMD is the Roth conversion. If I were 5-10 years younger I’d grab up some depressed growth funds today and do one. Yikes - With ARKK where it sits, how could you go wrong? That’s if you have a 5+ year time horizon. To the more caut…
Semantics. Forsyth acknowledges in this week’s Barron’s that the S&P pulled back a bit Friday after touching -20%. But the gist of his column (which I’ll need to reread) is that for all intents and purposes the S&P is in a bear market. I tr…
@davfor - thoughts worth chewing on
Agree.@davfor lays out a nice case. I don’t think we’re presently near the bottom of the bear market (term applyed by Forsyth this week). But we’ve made a lot of progress in that direction with the S&P down a…
Tempted to say that articles like this are examples of panic themselves. That aside, it could certainly get a lot worse. A lot depends on the Fed. I think’s they’re largely playing a bluffing game right now and it’s hard to know how much pain they’…
Added a small amount to assorted (sordid ) holdings. Dribble, dribble, dribble. A little here. A little there. Love a sale, but this thing could go on a lot longer. It’s kinda like rationing out the last remaining drops from a bottle of whisky -…
Thanks. Haven’t yet read my most recent WSJs. At one time crews could erase / turn off the voice recorder. Not sure if it’s still possible. If someone did disable or erase, we can be pretty certain it was a crew member - which is what I suspect.

Some friends of ours in SF got a generous promotion from Toyota to buy a fuel cell vehicle. It included a large credit to buy fuel. I don't remember the exact numbers. But they were pretty darn tickled to buy it in comparison to getting another Priu…
