Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
The value tilting funds I own have loaded up on oil since the March 2020 weird pricing, particularly SMVFX, SMXAX, GQEPX, and COWZ. I did not own any of those funds in early 2020.
@Old_Joe: I think you should hang on to ASML. Most foreign funds I respect seem to hold it and many of them also have Taiwan Semiconductor. It may be that China would like to get its hands on that company, but I pray they are level-headed enough not…
FWIIW, shortly after opinions were registered late this AM about the market being down, the whole shebang turned positive and finished well in the green.
Like @MikeW, I added to MOAT on days when market was coughing up red. I am seeing certain stocks getting pummeled after reporting decent earnings while others are being rewarded. Many would say conditions are treacherous and that Wednesday's rally i…
ISTM that the fracking industry, probably with help of lobbyists, succeeded beyond expectations in hoodwinking the public into thinking fracking is patriotic, good laissez-faire economics, and beneficial to the country. The industry seems to have su…
@WABAC: thanks for all the research you put into compiling your buy list and for sharing it here. I share your interests in infrastructure (PAVE and GLFOX chez moi), water (FIW) and green energy. GRID was unknown to me. I have added recently to BHCF…
ISTM that the interactive M* charting has once again disappeared. It used to be available in the "Quote" and the "Performance" tabs, but I can no longer see it. So many members have given up on M* that maybe I'm the only one who noticed.
I agree with you, @sma3, on Sirius. For $99 per year Apple Music offers practically everything ever recorded. My tastes are somewhat similar to yours and the only recordings I cannot get on AM are Harmonia Mundi’s catalogue. I wouldn’t know about op…
@hank: I still feel jilted by TMSRX, the first fund I ever owned in the « alternative » realm. To think that I recommended the fund to my daughter who was a newbie to investing.
Since then, I have had much better luck with REMIX, though nothing to …
@hank: the only difference I know of regarding stocks or funds in a brokerage account is that ADRs are ineligible for automatic dividend reinvestment. This is true at Schwab, FWIIW.
@davidmoran: a SeekingAlpha author today claimed that CDC was currently 75% in cash and said this was part of the fund’s mandate, given the weakness in the market. Are you holding any?
@davidmoran: Snowball profiled HAPY a couple if months ago when it came to market. There are links to its methodology; in a nutshell, companies whose employees are satisfied see outperformance in their stock. My reaction to reading the list of stock…
@Mark and @rforno: I try to think positively by repeating, « stocks are on sale. » It doesn’t always calm the jitters, but it helps. There is still ample dry powder, and I’m deploying it.
@davidmoran: my faith in COWZ remains intact, but it has been tested in recent weeks. I did reduce MOAT as its methodology put it in a tough spot. Of course it underwent holdings changes at the end of Q2, so maybe a trajectory that made me queasy wi…
@Derf: it used to be possible to average one’s income over 4-5 years, thereby reducing the pain from a big spike. The IRS did away with that provision, but I don’t know when.
@catch22: one other consequence of a one-time jump in taxable income is your Medicare premium rate, which is income-based. The premium is automatically jacked up, regardless of the reason, and stays there even if that year is an exception. In time, …
I took a look at the SC funds mentioned in Barron’s. Didn’t find one that would make me change my mind about BRSVX. The screening used M*’s « quality « metric. BRSVX does not measure up, or so it seems. AVALX has been mentioned on the board previou…
I have not looked into this, but the idea popped into my head that maybe the airline industry got treated too well during COVID and the DT administration. There has been reporting of late on huge waste and/or fraud in what was paid to businesses.
Jerry Jones appeared on CNBC today where he got applauded for making more than $1B on a bet on Comstock (CRK), so maybe we would be late to the party at this point.
Q: General Flynn, do you believe in the peaceful transfer of power in the United States of America?
A: The Fifth
What's astonishing to me is these scumbags with whom DT surrounded himself. Birds of a feather... This one was National Security Direct…
As outlined in today’s NY Times, Alito had been plotting the overthrow of Roe since his service the Reagan administration. We are dealing with fanatics (Thomas particularly) who have no qualms about lying to get on the Court (Thomas and Kavanaugh fo…
If you want to take a winger on the worst-of-the-worst, @derf, SCG is bringing up the rear. BCSIX, is a previous winner that holds almost all tech and healthcare. It’s closed at present. You could look at DVSMX and NEAGX. These three differ in the s…
Not sure where this comment belongs. If I click on a fund symbol in a discussion, an array of names of providers such as Yahoo, Smart Money, Barron’s etc. appears. The M* link, just today, takes me to the « not supported » language previously cited.…
Jay Winik’s The Great Upheaval, a study of crucial events in the 18th century, covers the origins of the Establishment Clause, as it has come to be known. I am a Connecticut native brought up in the Congregational Church, or at least it was the chur…
M* has an article today about DODFX. I am still invested in SVXAX and it has been one of the few bright spots on my very gloomy portfolio picture. A word to the wise: the Smead boys are not afraid of big bets, especially on energy which makes up 28%…
Thanks, @Ben, for those illuminating instructions. They were so good my conversions worked on the first try. Can't say it was something I would have discovered on my own. I did not look at M* linked instructions.
@fred495: you’re right about PQT_X taking a hit yesterday; so did KMLM. However, with today’s merde show in the markets, KMLM has recovered smartly. I suspect the PIMCO funds will be positive this evening. Thanks for the info on the Wadhwany fund. P…
