  • Ping: Brad, Chip, bee, Techies...highlighted tickers inoperative in my posts, others OK !!!
    Morn'in Accipiter, Investor and chip,
With our funds boat weekly listing/write, I have always parked the ticker symbol list against the left margin and without a leading space. Around the first few days of August, a Funds Boat write was posted and all tickers were highlighted when parked against the left margin. Sometime after about Aug 4, this changed. I can not define the date, as we were away on vacation. Looking back to our earliest post here for the Funds Boat (April 4) and all other weekly posts since, one finds no tickers highlighted that are parked against the left margin. Whatever changed has also "looked" backwards to all of the earlier posts with the same effect.
We use XP, w/ SP 2 and IE 8. We have not performed any updates/upgrades to these. As with FA and other sites, I do use the F5 refresh often. Also, the lack of highlighted tickers at the left margin per this discussion (below) is not affected by a full cleaning/delete of IE history, temp files, cookies or cache at our PC.
Per the link just above to our current write from Saturday, I will note again that I did go back into the write via edit and add a space before each ticker a the left margin. This allowed the highlight. I then edited a second time and removed the leading space only from the FAGIX (first on the list) and the highlight is gone again for this ticker. I do not have a problem with placing the space in front of the tickers, when the list is at full left margin. But, others have, and will do the same in the future when asking questions or posting a similar list that is parked against the left margin.
The feature and linkage via the ticker is a wonderful tool and undoubtly very much apprecitated by all. A recent post had 3 tickers in lower case, which I know do not highlight and this is okay. Posters will have to learn to do uppercase; and I am sure board members will remind folks about this feature, too.
Accipiter, Investor and chip, and Brad, too. I sure as hell owe you a beverage, at the very least. If any of you have a PayPal account, you may contact me via the private contact link available here and I will indeed move some electronic money your way, as a means of my appreciation for your efforts with MFO.
chip and Brad. Having planned to do this before and with this thread offering the opportunity; I do hope both of you are readers of MFO. I, of course; do not know your prior or present involvment with your own investments, BUT you have to be aware that you are involved with the premier funds investment board. You will obtain first hand knowledge here about fund investments that is a vast cumulative knowledge of experience. One would have to pick and dig through many books and/or sites to obtain this cumulative knowledge, and much of this would not necessarily be first hand experience; one of the greatest investment learning tools available.
Don't be shy about contacting me privately with your PayPal name; as my offer is most sincere.
    Regards,
    Catch/Mark #2

Reply to @Accipiter: The first FSICX in first column is a link but the second one did not become a link.

Hi Accipiter, Here is the MFO link to my post today, Sat., Aug 13.
    http://www.mutualfundobserver.com/discuss/index.php?p=/discussion/1006/our-funds-boat-week-1.09-ytd-3.33-self-inflicted-wound.....aug-13-2011/p1
With the initial post, I placed the fund tickers against the left margin, as in the past. I checked the post and discovered no ticker highlights. Later, Investor noted to place a space in front of the tickers. I edited the post and the highlight was then okay. I have just editied the post again, and have removed the space in front of the first fund on the list FAGIX. The highlight function is missing again. I will leave this in place until you let me know you have had time to view this.
Thank you, too; for your efforts.
    Regards,

Reply to @Accipiter: The new code seems to insert an additional space between symbol and ticker. work/FSICX. There is no typed space after / and before FSICX. Also the following (ticker on first column) still does not work.
    FSICX
  • Please fix linkification code
Reply to @Accipiter: Testing again PRPFX
    PRPFX (no leading space)
    PRPFX (leading space)
  • what's been holding up: funds that survived the first part of the melt and thrived long-term
Reply to @Accipiter: I actually want the autolink code to be fixed. If I am posting a URL that embeds a fund ticker (lets say I want to link to an article where URL includes the ticker) the URL is destroyed. The code should recognize that the ticker is not standalone and should avoid linkifying the URL.
  • TRP increases IRA management fees and raises minimum for waivers....
    Thanks Accipiter,
Dont like sound of it. Sounds like the rich getting richer and the poor getting ^#$^&*!. Penalizes little fella trying to diversify and get a start on a IRA. Hundred bucks every year for 5 funds.
But I like Price for its quality funds, integrity, and generally good treatment of clients. We've made sure to meet their 50k minimum. They know this and probably figure more will shift funds their way to avoid them dastardly fees.
Course you can make a case on the other side. Its true we dont notice them hidden fees as much in the ER and other expenses. And should your manager screws up big time, will cost ya more than 100 dollars. So she goes...

Accipiter, I'm signed up for electronic subscription to reports, prospectuses, statements and confirmations, and receive no marketing e-mail. As I recall, you can pick the statement etc. choices and uncheck all the other boxes at the bottom of the page, and you'll get the former without any of the marketing schtuff. (I do think it's worth it to get the two newsletters, though.)
Also note that TRP is changing its 90-day round-trip frequent-trading rule as of Aug 1. They're going to a 30-day freeze on purchase of the same fund in the same account type after a sale of same. Much, much improved ...
    Cheers,
    AJ

Sorry Cathy... the technical compliment was meant for Accipiter and Investor. With respect to the financial side, I'm there with you... Questions only, not too many answers. :-)

Good morning- I just realized that you and Accipiter/Falcon have become the defacto technical gurus of our community... although I'll bet neither of you quite planned it that way. I just wanted to thank both of you for the extra time and thought that you have been putting in on technical matters. In one sense, it's a natural extension of our FA community... trying to help others when we can. I just wish that I had more knowledge in both financial matters and internet technology so that I could be a little more helpful in these areas.
    Best regards- OJ
  • Chip - Could you get rid of Test (activity) from my profile?
Thanks for the fix, Accipiter! It worked like a charm.

Both Investor and Accipiter posted solid replies. I only suggest that you use the recent 52 week average premium/ discount and also look at a long term history. GIM goes back many years and it is all available on cefconnect.com (nuveen website) or cefa.org. Even M* has recently developed a CEF section. When premium is above historical average, there are bound to be wild swings in the price which have nothing to do with NAV. People who bought at a discount are booking their profits for example... So i do suggest sticking to the average or below average pricing.
Additionally, when you research a closed end fund, check out leverage and a distribution source. For GIM, there is no leverage, and the 5% distribution has been historically paid purely out of income, complemented by cap gains - no destructive return of capital.

    Howdy Accipiter,
Still getting used to the nuts and bolts at the new shop here.
The reply feature would be way to link the posts together.
Why change the title line? I already place the date for reference.
Ya don't even want me to keep the Funds Boat? Maybe I'll change
my name too and use another pc and email address. It'll be like
    I am a whole new member/lurker.
    Take care,

I am in GIM as well. Managed very similarly to the mutual fund, but it is at a premium that seems getting steeper with each day. I was able to add to my position recently by placing a limit order and was pleasantly surprized that it was hit. I am with Accipiter that this is a "Fund Discussion" and not at all OT.
  • TEXT limit, I blew-up the fund board...no chatter box fella :):):)
    Hi Accipiter,
Thank you for your time and efforts with this.
Will just have to limit the writing of any thoughts I have; which may be a good thing to others...:):):)

    Hi Accipiter,
Looks like the post will be little or no chatter box.............as I sure don't plan on posting two Funds Boat notes.
Thank you for your time with this.

"disagree, Accipiter. Had a brief comment to Investor under another heading, and found the icomplete draft lingering. " this was saved during a 20 second typing of the above. Really annoying.

disagree, Accipiter. Typed a brief comment to Investor under another heading, and found the icomplete draft lingering after the posting. Quite annoying.
