  • But it wouldn't be a sweep if it were 5 games.

( Professor Snowball: please note the erudite use of the subjunctive mood.)

    Go Cubs!

There would be a sweep [1] if the World Series had been restored [2] to best-of-nine games.

Although most World Series have been of the best-of-seven format, the 1919 World Series was a best-of-nine series (along with 1903, 1920, and 1921). Baseball decided to try the best-of-nine format partly to increase popularity of the sport and partly to generate more revenue.
  • @ibartman. OMG, your knowledge runs deep. Once upon a time, a best of 9 series---I did not know this! An "essential" factoid! (I am not worthy)
  • Yes, and pigs fly too! Seriously I would love to see the Cubbies take it all. They are everyone's lovable Charlie Brown team.

Yes, indeed. I believe they'll win tonight with Arietta on the mound. I give Jon Lester high, but not excellent, marks. Saw a lot of him while he was in Beantown.
  • @ibartman By the way, your real first name wouldn't happen to be STEVE, would it?

About the cartoon and about the joint effort of the NY/Chi cartoonists:

  • The Cubbies will be fortunate if the series goes five games.
  • Oops, should have said "Swept in four." Can't believe everything you see in the movies ....

    Hi Guys,

This outcome is yet another piece of evidence that "forecasters can't forecast". Wait til next year again for Cub fans.

But there is a positive aspect to the prediction. The series did end in a clean sweep. So a generous interpretation of the forecast is that it was at least half right. If we invest with similar accuracy, it's a good idea to hire a portfolio manager.

Have fun guys; it was/is a good baseball season even for Cub fans.

    Best Wishes.
