@Maurice. Never said from each according to his abilities. Aside from that, the depths of your ignorance as to what Russia was and became--a totalitarian state--and what Marxism is or for instance what the difference is between a menshevik and bolshevik, Trostskyite versus Stalinist, knows no bounds. Marx would be rolling over in his grave if he could see what Stalin did to Russia and what Russia is today. As for socialism, there's not a developed nation on earth that doesn't have socialist and capitalist aspects. The Social Security you enjoy, the Medicare you use, the military you ostensibly revere, the national parks services, the police force and fire department are all state/government run, publicly-funded institutions with socialistic dimensions to them. Besides which, your statements and nasty accusations hurled at me with complete ignorance are just plain rude.

@LB, save your fingers typing to this rude (jeez, you are polite!) kid who ever claims to alone know history when he does not, and imputes ignorance (and to me entitlement :) ) to others without knowing.
  • "...Unfortunately, many in America equate Socialism with Soviet Communism. They are unaware that Socialist ideals have nothing to do with Stalin’s policies. Orwell saw Stalin and Hitler as pursuing essentially the same aim of creating a totalitarian state. Orwell wrote against totalitarianism and passionately for a democratic and fair Socialist society in Britain."

  • @Maurice: I see your bound and determined to continue this stream of non-financial threads, that do nothing but turn-off potential MFO Members. In my opinion, its time for you to head elsewhere.
    :(:(:(
  • Hey, Ted, put a sock in it, okay? Just skip it, rather than advocating self-banishment. Come on. Your 'nothing but' is simply wrong.
  • A good way to celebrate (?) the Revolution would be to read "A Gentleman in Moscow," by Amor Towles.
  • Interesting article in Weekend WSJ if you are looking to read up on Commies.

The tsar was overthrown/abdicated in March. As to who's celebrating and who's not, I doubt any Romanov descendants threw wild parties this year.

As to what milennials are thinking about "socialism," the model they have in front of them and are responding to is Scandinavian-style social democracy, not Stalinism.
