Is It Too Dangerous To Retire In Mexico?

FYI: “Plenty of people ask me if it’s safe to retire in Mexico,” says J.E. Jack. “I tell them I get kidnapped twice a week and occasionally beheaded.” The sixty-four year-old used to live and work in Los Angeles, California. But he retired to San Antonio, Mexico five years ago.

He’s among thousands of expatriate retirees living near Mexico’s Lake Chapala. Many of them are like Lori and Randy Grant. They love the region’s low cost of living. “It helped us retire early,” says Randy. The 49 year-old former schoolteacher says, “It costs us about $1,600 a month to live down here.” The couple maintains a blog at freetirement.weebly.com.

  • Howdy folks,

Alas and alack, it's become too dangerous to even travel to Mexico. Such a pity. Wifey and I have been about a half dozen times and loved it, but this past week, they just had a gunfight in Cancun that left, what - some 9 people dead. They said it was cartel related.

Cancun was about the last 'safe' place to visit. No more climbing El Castillo. I remember when my folks went to the Copper Canyon. Yeah, right.

    and so it goes,

    peace,

  • Oh, dear. I recall a fun long week-end at San Felipe, near the northern end of the Sea of Cortez. (Gulf of California.) Amazingly huge tides, like the Bay of Fundy!
