three bits 'n' pieces

Hi, guys.

I just deleted one discussion. While I agree with tilt of it, it was contributing rather more heat than light.

At OJ's suggestion, I "announced" a thread on health insurance. That means that it will remain atop the board for as long as folks have interest in it.

And yes, we know the site has been glitching. But no, don't know why. OJ's guess, with which Chip is sympathetic, is that there's an process that runs intermittently (somewhere) and that slows us down. Sadly, no trace of which process and we've never caught it in the act.

The logical solution is a new server, which means migrating all of the site content - both MFO and the board - to a new home. Chip has done about 90% of that one her own but we've encountered a problem: the board embeds a bunch of customizations that Accipiter wrote long ago. Migrating to a new server is possible only if all of our software is up-to-date and we're concerned that the new software will be incompatible with the work Accipiter did, and so the discussion board - or at least many of its functions - might break.

The logical solution to that is finding "a programmer skilled in WordPress, Vanilla board, PHP, and MySQL, running on a CentOS server with cPanel for controls (our current tech stack)." Chip has been in contact with several programmers who are sure they can handle this stuff, right up until they look at the whole stack and go "uhh, yeah, about that."

The search continues, with some urgency. If folks have leads on someone with the appropriate mad skills, Chip@MutualFundObserver-dot-com is waiting by the phone! Otherwise, we'll keep scrounging.

As ever,

David

  • "it was contributing rather more heat than light."

It was contributing plenty of light on the fact that FD1000 can say anything he wants, but when challenged on the veracity of his remarks, is NEVER able to respond.

Now that we've transitioned to Trump-like censorship, it's hard to know what the new rules are.

Sad days in the United States.

  • Dave I can always ping students in my program and/or my parent CS department ... call it an 'internship' and you/we might get some qualified nibbles if they can count it for a few credits. Of course it's too late for Fall, but maybe for Spring....?
