Seeking Brokerage

I currently use Vanguard brokerage service, but am looking for an alternative for those funds unavailable on VBS. I have been looking at Scottrade who carry the funds I am interested in and they also have a brick and mortar office conveniently located. While researching I thought I would seek input here on brokerages used, experiences, customer service and tools available. Whether good or bad I would appreciate your comments and suggestions as actual customer experience is more valuable input than standard marketing material.

I use American Century's brokerage arm of which I am very satisfied with. Both the selection of funds and the service have been top notch. They are not the least expensive however, but depending on the amount of money you have with them some fees are put aside. Charles Schwab is another firm I deal with and I have had nothing but excellent customer service with them. They also have a good deal in their bank with their investor checking. No fees, no minimum.

Would echo John Chisum's observations above, with respect to Schwab. Also have dealt with American Century's fund group (no the brokerage group) for many years with complete satisfaction.

Like you are contemplating, I chose Schwab because they have an office a block away, but I have to tell you that they handle stuff so well on-line that I haven't been over there since opening the account some years ago.

Scottrade, Schwab, Fido, Vanguard. Open accounts with all is my advice and you are nicely covered.

Brick-and-mortar does not mean much any more. Schwab has great online options, a lot of no-load, NTF, and load-waived funds, good pricing, and good service if you need it. Vanguard would be my fourth choice: Schwab, Fidelity, Price, Vanguard. Scottrade is ok if you want to do mostly ETF and individual stock trades.
