ACA Marketplace Premium Increases for 2026

edited 8:57AM in Off-Topic
@FD1000,

For years (before you retired and got the best MA plan in the world!) you cried on the internet about President Obama's failure with Obamacare with its high co-pays, deductibles, and premiums. Please tell all your friends on MFO what you think of Trump's efforts with all his executive orders to lower the high co-pays, deductibles, and premiums.

"For people buying health insurance via the Affordable Care Act marketplace, premiums are expected to rise significantly in 2026. That’s the result of two things. Firstly, insurers are proposing a median premium increase of 18%. And secondly, enhanced premium subsidies (which have been in place 2020 – 2025) are scheduled to expire at the end of this year.

That second point means, among other things, that (if no legislation is passed) we’ll go back to a situation in which there’s a “cliff” at 400% of the federal poverty guideline (i.e., as soon as you cross that income level, the premium subsidy immediately goes to zero)'.

  • I worked with a fellow who was always parroting right wing talking points about Obamacare. Until both his son and daughter needed affordable coverage. Then his son was approved, but his daughter was refused for some reason. He had a total meltdown over that. She had no job and was married/pregnant and living with him. The exact scenario that red states disallow by refusing Medicaid expansion funds. This was not a red state, but he could not explain the reason for the refusal.

    My son was laid off in 2020 due to Covid-induced business weakness. He was able to get ACA coverage for about 6 months, until he relocated to a red state for education/ housing reasons. Then because his income was below $12K annually, while getting a Master's, he was disallowed. We paid his premiums and moved on. No meltdown required.

    It seems like quite a few of these right-wing "fellows" are absolute hypocrites.
  • Well, at least one certainly jumps to mind.
