I have a 529 account in Utah (with Vanguard index funds) and one in West Virginia (using DFA funds) and it is interesting to compare. Over the past 4 years, the Utah plan has outperformed, but again its not apples to apples. FWIW

Thanks David. I agree with your comment, but I have to add that I still believe that seafarer (and others) should require some token investment in their fund even if there are only seven folks. To me, that seems reasonable.
I might compare it to COLLX or GATEX or RSAIX, although their stated goals are less about income and more about reducing volatility.
