I tried this calculator for N=10 (payments to age 95) and came up with 7.61% rate.
With N = 5 (payments to age 90), the return is 4.49%.
Thanks - neither of those returns seem very interesting.
Dex, you are spot-on and I have been doing similar calculations. But I am also trying to factor in that the $125,000 is RMD free. But regardless, if I live to 95 that is $550,000 (actually $425,000 after factoring in the $125,000) I have receive…
I have always been against annuities. The first link explains why you should never buy an annuity. But the second link about the new rule where you can purchase up to $125,000 of a deferred annuity with IRA money that won't go against your RMD sou…
Casually suggesting that large-scale import of "flood water", which is intermittently available at best, over the Rocky Mountain and the Sierra mountain ranges, from halfway across the United States, unfortunately fails to appreciate the scale and …
Additionally, if it gets to the point where we have to discuss as a nation that we have to start figuring out a way to send water by rail to California... geez.
Doesn't Perrier do that already?
Isn't the point of saving to provide the opportunity to spend at some later point in time? Get use to the fact that 1/3 of the US will be spending down their hard earned savings.
Seems stimulative to the economy to me.
I dare say, fewer AUM due t…
"So we can't build bigger pipes?????????????????????"
It will be fascinating to watch the other forty-nine states step up in Congress and tell how enthusiastic they are about helping to pay for shipping water to California. And let's see now, as lo…
"The New Yorker" featured a fascinating in-depth article on the Colorado River 3-4 weeks ago. Don't know if it's available on line or not. What struck me was how heavily reliant so many states are on its supply and the way in which agreements hav…
Energy pipelines are very small in comparison to water pipelines. Natural gas is compressed, but water, to be worthwhile to move, would require huge amounts. The pumping infrastructure would also be a major factor. To get a feel for this, you should…
We can move oil, gasoline and natural gas around the country yet moving water from flood areas is a problem??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
A few days ago, Dex posted on the most recent M2 Money Supply velocity. For me, the constant bombardment from all this data is an overload that is more likely to promote anxiety rather than insight.
That Dex guy posts some good stuff.

Economically - I think we can all agree this has been a fragile recovery. So, I don't think that will be a catalyst.
Stock market wise - it is jittery. Any sort of an event - terrorist, oil interruption - could push it over the cliff.
First the manufacturing, now the service. What's left? Who the hell is going to have enough money to go to Disney/land/world/whatever? Is anyone in a position of commercial or capitalistic or governmental responsibility even thinking about where thi…
Unfortunately this is the dark side of capitalism.
Capitalism gets blamed for all that is wrong and not for what is right. There is no 'free capitalism' in the USA. It is regulated capitalism. The issues is that there were regulations in pl…
The people of this nation are not thinking. If your kids owe their souls to the Student Loan store already, they cannot pledge allegiance to the company store too unless we just plan to have them live on ever increasing ETIC supplements from the sha…
Ted? Anyone who disagrees with you, you bully, insult or tell to shut up. You sound more and more like the Russian Communists you claim to despise every day. MFO = A totalitarian State of Ted.
That's his way of saying he loves you.
Speaking of indicators ... Laugh if you wish ... but, I track and note the S&P 500 Index readings with respect to the new and full moons. And, I have used the moon's phases to position cost average into some of my current positions. Now, let's…

Yes - I have a line item budget for the above years.

Not learning is different then not liking.
As far as your 'assessment': I defer to the Tony Randall in The Odd Couple:

Please explain why you so dislike Tom Lauricella’s writings. They seemed fair and open-minded to me. I’m always anxious to learn. I suspect you are too.
Woow, woow - where did I say I dislike Tom?
Hi Dex,
Well I suppose your one-liner, gratuitous comment is calculated to secure some attention. But it falls miserably short if it is designed to inspire a consensus.
Hi yourself,
Please list from the OP article what he learned over the last 1…
Hi Guys,
Thank you all for facilitating this controversy on income growth and distribution. It is a centuries-old debate that does have a direct impact on our economy, and by easy extension to our marketplace.
I don't think anyone here knew they…
" 29 percent of such households don’t have a pension."
What is surprising is that 71% do have a pension.
If I read the article correctly, I think it claims 29% of the 50% that don't have retirement savings also don't have pensions. The percentage…

Ted,
I'm still waiting for your summary of the monthly commentaries. I can't wade through all that stuff about college and college students.
