Lynn,
Thank you so much. I am planning on a 3-year ladder since I am a year away from retirement. Lots of spreadsheet work to calculate the income replacement needed. This ladder will create a steady income stream. So thank you for all your help.
I moved back to high quality bond funds this year. Some of which you covered in the SA article. For now, I will stay with agency bonds to the bond ladder. I will pick active managers for corporate bonds.

You are highlighting Fidelity’s best active managers. Can you imagine what these funds would perform with a smaller asset, say 10% of the current level?
He has a sizable team co-managing the fund. They have been running the day to day operation while hw was on sabbatical leave. Think the transitioning should be seamless. One concern is the large asset base and the fund has changed from a small ca…
@Roy, you brought up excellent point. We consolidated our brokerage and mutual accounts a number years ago for ease of tracking to two large brokerages. So we have to reconsider this announcement from TRP since we already invested in a number of th…
Very insightful for sure. I went back to view her YouTube interviews in the last 10 years and they are consistently informative. Toward the end she picked Cathy Woods’s ETF, AKKK as an example of innovation that drive this economy.
Thank you. Gold is trending upward this week as inflation increases; announced 6.1% this morning.
Not a hedge but letting the cash invested in VTIP and bank loan funds.
Waffling is a nice way to say being evasive . I got the same feeling that Doll talked around the subject without giving details on his strategies. One thing for sure that performance does not guarantee future outcomes.
Don’t know when Micheal Kass’s interview was made. Seemed to be dated and overly bullish on China in light of what is happening this year. Good insight in November’s commentaries from Professor Snowball and Lynn Bolin.
Agree. Also the company matching also helps quite a bit, sometime in the range of 4% or more. By the time I entered the work force, define pension plan already disappeared. So the burden of saving for retirement was on the workers who have to lea…
Concur with davfor’s assessment. Having the Fed and other foreign Fed entities participating in (or as part of) the stock market is unprecedented. Will see how this tapering plays out in the near term.
Roth IRA used to have $2,000 limit when it started in 1998. Many people don’t have jobs with 401K) and 403(b) plans. How can one save enough for retirement with $6,000 and 1,000 catch-up, per year?
@Derf, there is no linkage to an article.
No to hijack your posting here. Another article from Liz Ann Sonders on fed's tapering and the subsequent rate hike in 2022.
The announced initial pace of the taper clears the way for the start of …
One would think the asset base gets smaller every year as the investors flee to elsewhere. If nothing else, one do better with a 60/40 balanced index fund.
You’d have made less than a half-percent annually had you bought the fund when it opened 21 years ago.
That is really sad. After 2% inflation, the investors are behind every year.
TRP must be expanding into new offering, alternatives.
@crash, TRP bond funds are all long positions. PImco employs many tactics including derivatives and futures. This year is particularly challenging for most bonds since the yield moving upwa…
Drawdown on junk bonds in March 2020 is over 10% until the Fed’s rescue. Junk bonds are up this year while the quality bonds, government and corporate, are all in red.
I have shifted to bank loans and short-term TIPs. Next year could be even more…
My understanding is that RMD only affect the total sum of IRA, not Roth IRA and Roth 401k). Roth accounts came from after tax dollars thus there is no distribution upon withdrawal.
You need to add up all non-Roth IRA accounts and use the life exp…
Waited 4 weeks to get Honda parts to repair my car. Generic part costed about the same due to limited supply.
Los Angles is the main port for import goods and they are back logged badly. Many container tankers are sitting right off shore of LA. …
Several posters commented on this fund on another tread. Quite a flexible allocation fund with good risk profile with respect to 2020’s drawdown and recovery time. Also it is more value oriented.
Now is the enrollment period, you need to spend time talking with insurance companies on their coverage and cost. Be specific about the medical treatment you are seeking. It may be the less costly HMO plans do not cover these treatments unless you…
No worry @Mark. I appreciate your suggestion on I bond. With low interest rate and higher inflation, there are limited viable choices for income investors.
In one of the TRP interview with Sebastian Page who stated future allocation may need to ad…
Agree on how to pay for local infrastructure with some states being better than the others. Several water issues arise in the state of Michigan whether they are merely coincidence or not, but they all point to old piping not being updated. My home…
Many years ago I played with flight simulation software when they became available for PC. With joystick and pedals you can get a realistic experience of flying everything from propeller planes, jets, and helicopters. One get a real appreciation of …
@Mark, Thanks for the Jim Sloan's articles. We invested in FMSDX in our tax-deferred accounts several years ago. It appeared that I bonds cannot be purchased through brokerages and they can purchase only through TreasuryDirect site and the tax ref…
Volcker raised the federal funds rate, which had averaged 11.2% in 1979, to a peak of 20% in June 1981.
I remembered my parents were buying CDs that pay double digit dividends. The inflation was very high in the 70-80's. This year the 10-year trea…
When was the last time the rate hike is more than 25 bp (or 0.25%) since Alan Greenspan? It is more likely the rate hike will be gradual and sustain for several quarters unless inflation persists.
For sure it is a mess. Also there is a shortage of experienced truck drivers. So the cargoships and containers just sit at the docks. The consumers are so used to have everything readily available in the stores and not appreciate the complexity o…
The Russell 3000 Growth Index was up 84% cumulatively over the last two years through August (more than double the return of its Value counterpart).
Thank you. That is why I preferred actively managed growth over growth-index funds and ETF. I rea…
@lynnbolin2021, thank you for your articles. I too have been reducing risk and using more asset allocation funds including FMSDX. Just want to simply life. Your research helped considerably to narrow down the vast choices available.
Note that th…
Good for those who got their booster shot. Moderna booster was approved by FDA yesterday and J&J booster approval is coming soon. Testing on “mix and match” between the 3 vaccines in US is highly encouraging. FDA approval is sometime away.

Thanks for your detailed analysis on fund funds. This has been a challenging year for many bond funds. One that stands out is Pimco Income, PIMIX (multi sector bond fund) while my index bonds are down a bit. I too are looking for alternate bond fu…
