Thank you sma3! We are spending this summer in northwest again. I have no quiet place I can be before noon eastern (9 am here). Library opens at 9am! I've set up a session for Friday, 2 pm eastern ... posted on board. But, if that does not work, just call me at 805 468 9599 ... if I can pick up I will. Hopefully, can pick a day where you can attended from noon on. Very happy to do! c
Really cool.
Hey, Powers of Ten has been a favorite of mine for years. Believe it was Professor Philip Morrison that first introduced me to it.
Thanks!
I think this is good news.
Been worried actually that daily reporting for active ETFs puts them at a bit of a disadvantage to traditional mutual funds that require only quarterly reporting of holdings.
Thanks Brian (and Ted) for calling to our att…
Investment gains in 2014 were partially offset by a third quarter after-tax other-than-temporary impairment charge of $441 million related to our investment in Tesco PLC common stock.
Interesting day for couple issues, like SHLD.
Oil continues to recover.
Lighter volume, maybe cause of holiday weekend.
Actually, nice to have a week without volatility...
It's the worst. Drives me crazy. I've complained to them about it, but as usual with M* never seems to do any good.
You're absolutely right. It's Saturday morning and M* still showing FAAFX, which is in my portfolio, at Thursday's close.
@Maurice.
Sounds to me it is the volatility associated with Fairholme Funds that has made you wanting to seek alternatives.
FAIRX this decade is certainly more volatile than FAIRX last decade.
Serendipity or change in style?
@Maurice.
Maybe it is time to sell.
What other money managers do you think will make more money for retail investors than Bruce Berkowitz, over say 3-5 year period?
I'm almost afraid to ask... =).
@Scott.
Berkowitz was buying Sears over the last couple of weeks and that is probably not reflected - that may have contributed.
I certainly liked the result today.
But it almost seems like insider trading, no?
The bottom line is that if you want the convenience of a supermarket, you'll either pay a transaction fee for it, or pay an ongoing fee which could easily cost you more. And if you buy direct, don't buy a fund that can be purchased NTF at a supermar…
I enjoyed great interview with TTFS Portfolio Manager Minyi Chen at the recent M* Conference. I'm not a fan of AdvisorShares, so I was skeptical going in. Hope to have a profile on TTFS soon.
GE had an especially good day, which is always nice see. Lately starting to look at GE as a sort of forward indicator for world development.
HCP retreated 3% after reporting strong earnings yesterday. I picked up more.
OAK and HCP now my two bigge…
The friend stops and says, "Look, there is a $20 bill on the ground!"
The economist turns and coolly replies, "Can't be. If there was a $20 bill on the ground, somebody would have already picked it up."
From...The Twenty Dollar Bill.
Hard to support gold when the dollar is rising, no?
I like oil, but it seems to be in cross-fires last few months.
I''ll want to see some level of support before jumping back in.
Maybe we are close...$80 has been a kind of trigger point for a whi…
@finder.
I share same disappointment about GTAA performance. It's never been easy to love.
I tried to articulate both Mebane's disappointments and successes so far in the piece "The Existential Pleasure of Engineering Beta."
I actually think he's…
Funny how there is suddenly an oil glut every time alternative energy, fuel efficiency, or new extraction techniques take more than a couple steps forward.
One of few shows that made me really laugh. Very sorry to hear.
And the closing line...
"Well, you've wasted another perfectly good hour listening to Car Talk."
Crack me up.
Gotta love it.
It was indeed a very good day.
AA up 3.3%.
OAK recovered 2%.
SAFM up 4.3%
Even laggard SCHN up 1%.
Nice way to end October...don't let the door hit you in the :).
OAK hammered today on earnings disappointment.
I thought the earnings call was good and can't help but think future remains bright for OAK.
So, took opportunity pick up more.
Almost KKR as well. But not quite yet. I've grown concerned that they w…
I think the spike has been written about...and debated. (eg, Montier). Some say it was an anomaly and should be ignored. I vote to ignore it...along with the entire 51% drawdown =).
I picked up SAFM after recent swoon (I hope) under $80. Thanks again to a friend of MFO for putting me on to it. Close hold right now since it has considerable short attention.
Close watch list: BRK, PCP, MKL, KKR, BA, XOM, OXY, HES, AIG, APA, AMZN…
Ha! You don't need to remind me...I feel it everyday I open my Schwab account.
And get this, Andrew Lane of M* was on the earning call.
He just reduced his fair value estimate from $30 to $23.
Looks like he stopped believing.
Looks like market digested results and SCHN now up 3%. That's another 5% swing on earnings day, which seems quite common these days.
Amazing how short term the market can be.
Perhaps each quarterly reports seems to validate held perception of true…
