Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
You guys have me totally confused, yet again. (It doesn't take much, these days.) If the article being referred to is the "Reuters: “How A Massive Options Trade by a JP Morgan Fund Can Move Markets” article on Yahoo, wasn't that published on Thursd…
"I have to figure out how to post charts here"
@JD_co- Well, that isn't particularly easy for a chart like the one at your link. Probably the easiest way for something like that is to take a screen shot on your computer, upload that to a free inter…
Yes, actually we did something like that back in the 70s. Inflation was roaring, and I bought a couple of callable municipal bonds out of Salt Lake, to build an electric power generating facility, paying around 14%. (Figured that I could trust the M…
@DavidV- FWIW I always specify non-callable. How can we rely on callable? Usually callable only pays a small amount more than non-callable- is it worth that small amount to gamble?
From some of the above observations and comments it seems worth noting that in the not too distant future the application of advanced AI to processes such as robo-advisors may make a major difference in their construction and performance.
@Observant1- In the many years that I've been with MFO I've never seen anyone present such complete, detailed and interesting information with respect to a retirement plan that was recommended by a financial firm. Nice job! It should be useful to ot…
"$100K is not meaningful to change someone's life."
A total disconnect to the reality of human life. And there we see a person for what he really is. Not pretty.
@dtconroe- Exactly- same here.
However...if answering this question prior to maybe five years ago the answer would have been entirely different. The financial positioning is entirely different when comparing accumulation years and preservation year…
@BenWP: Tell me! Sometime in the 50s or 60s my parents installed hideous green wall-to-wall shag carpeting in most of the house. I'm sure that they were trying to make me think about moving out.
Sometimes I worry that David Snowball may enhance MFO by cancelling my login. That wouldn't increase any paid subscriptions though, so that's probably the only reason why I'm still allowed in the door.
"One nice takeaway... is the iconic early 70s styles and fashions. Yellow corded telephones / Avocado colored refrigerators / dated hair styles leap out from the screen. A striking trip backward in time."
I know exactly what you mean. We have a com…
5.5% 2 year cd jp Morgan Chase is callable, and Chase will call it in a moment if they can save 10 cents on the situation.
However, on Schwab I bought a JPMorganChase callable at 5.7%, maturity 12/18/2024. On a short hold time like that I'll take m…
Years ago we were with a group of Michigeese and Michiganders in the old bazaar in Instanbul. Some of the men were busy at a shop specializing in "knock-offs" of expensive watches. As I joined them a couple of salesmen immediately surrounded me aski…
I am SO happy that we're entirely out of equities and are just trying to not lose too much to inflation with CDs and Treasuries. This market would drive me nuts. (ie- nuttsier than I already am)
(OK- how's that for "emphasis" ???)
Sounds like our weekend place. Didn't build it as an investment- we've had 25 years of use and pleasure out of it. With current insurance problems it may not be easy to sell that either. If we just break even, adjusted for inflation, that will be fi…
Yes, in some parts of the world including here in California sand dredging has caused major damage to beaches and waterways, destabilizing adjacent land and damaging local fishing. Been going on for some years.
@FD1000- if you don't mind a suggestion, a good alternative to all CAPS is simply to use the "Bold" or "Italic" formatting options. Just select the word that you want to emphasize, and use the "B" or the "I", or even both. Like so:
Valuation It…
From that article:
His study of market history taught him, he said, that long bull markets have four stages: reluctance, consolidation, grudging acceptance and exuberance. This last period is marked by fearless behavior, the entry into the market of…
@MikeM- Right! And I assumed all along that you were assuming the assumption that it doesn't matter which you buy, which you were assuming all along. So now I'm assuming that I was right on that too! :)
