Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
I'm uncertain as to how to read WABAC's post. Stillers, if I interpret him correctly, seems to have understood it as WABAC having sold, or tried to sell, short term CDs before maturity.
I read WABAC as saying that he has tried holding short-term CD…
"Current policies have resulted in a remarkable drop in the money supply."
Well, at least that's a good sign. Hopefully things can be stabilized without significant job loss.

Again, I accept Krugman's reading of the overall economy. From the Krugman report that you reference: "it’s probably worth noting that private surveys confirm official reports of rapidly declining inflation as well"
I have no problem believing that…
For the record, I'm with Krugman, and have little regard for Summers, with respect to the general economic overview. Summers is a complete jerk, and always has been.
My aggravation is with the fact that the inflation numbers presented to us as refl…
"No matter what the retirees who are the majority of posters here think, economic well being in the U.S. is not just about the inflation rate."
@LewisBraham- Hey there Lewis... I'm not sure that anyone here has suggested that economic well being in…
Yeah, but none of that stuff is counted in "core" inflation. It's too "volatile", because it's gone up too much. "Core" inflation mainly counts stuff like apple cores, and they haven't hardly gone up at all (unless you buy the entire apple).
@davidmoran- Yes sir, there certainly is "lots of writing on why this is", and indeed I've read much of it, including Krugman on a regular basis.
That doesn't help at all at the grocery store or gas station.
FWIW I bought some batteries via Amazon…
@Crash- The only problem with your suggestion is that in most cases it's not economically affordable to convert office space to affordable housing units. Or, usually, even unaffordable housing units. No quick fixes available sir.
Well hell, with all those economists I'm sure that we're in good hands. I wonder how many of them do their own shopping at the grocery store?
Surely with some 3000 employees some of them must be custodians, maintenance folks, cafeteria workers, and…
"Russia is a gang-ocracy, through and through. Violence, extortion, graft, tribute, blackmail, murder, EVERYWHERE, right down to the local Alderman."
Sounds positively Trumpian.

Maybe all of the wonderful new AI needs all of our personal info. Maybe someday it might tell us why, and what it does with it. Maybe Zuckerberg will stop jerking us around. Same for…
Somehow I don't think that just anyone can "rent" this kind of stuff:
Members of Wagner group preparing to pull out from the headquarters of the Southern Military District to return to their base in Rostov-on-Don late on Saturday.

Here's another interesting development. Following are excerpts from a current report in the Washington Post:
Ramzan Kadyrov offered troops to stop Wagner
Ramzan Kadyrov, leader of Russia’s Muslim-majority Chechen Republic, said in a Saturday Tel…
Maybe Putin has gotten a bit more than he asked for, or really wanted. Whatever the outcome, this might be very interesting. Just to clarify a bit, Prigozhin, the head of Wagner, is not a general (except maybe in his own mind)- he's a civilian, and …
You know, there really isn't all that much difference between the Republicans and certain major religions which assert that they, and only they, have the qualifications necessary to define "truth", and to employ whatever means necessary to insure th…
"Regional banking has stabilized."
For the moment, yes. But it wouldn't take much to restart a major problem in this area, and no one seems to have any good idea of how to really stabilize this area. It's not that there's anything particularly new …
Man, this opens a whole bag of important questions. What are the correct "personal pronouns" for neutered Martians? Should they be considered as part of the "trans" community? If they engage in competitive sports who exactly should they play against?
Well, here's some excerpts from a recent report in The Guardian. Evidently Barr's comments were not well received in some quarters.
Donald Trump’s former attorney general William Barr believes that the former president may be “toast” as he faces a s…
I can only tell you that for at least ten years I've used both Firefox and DuckDuckGo together, along with a separate ad/tracker blocker, and had absolutely no security issues that I'm aware of. I didn't know that DDG has a separate browser, but I'm…
