Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
@Sven- Maybe it's just me, but I just think that having something that's listening to every word it hears, and reporting that back to Apple or anyone else, is totally creepy- right out of Orwell's "1984". If I can get through the rest of my life wit…
@Derf- iPhones for Dummies didn't cut it, but thanks to your suggestion I found this on Amazon. I want to keep a reference copy on hand, so the library wouldn't work in this case. Thanks for your suggestion- it got me on the right track.
Yes, I was…
@BenWP- Thanks for the suggestions. I've been wearing top-line digital hearing aids for at least fifteen years now. I do intend to see about a setup like you mention. Thanks much for your interest.
@Derf- I hear you. Man, do I ever hear you!

Yes, the threads do sometimes wander around a bit, but I think that's usually healthy, as there are typically connecting elements of the conversations, such as in this case, various reactions to and handling of inflation cycles. No problema.
@Sven- thanks, that's pretty much what I was planning to do. I think that I have most of the phone stuff under control, and plan to tackle some of the other stuff one at a time. What they make you go through just to get a user manual is simply uncon…
"Fido is offering a 5.50% 15 year (Callable) CD - Jonesboro State Bank"
@JD_co -
In my opinion this is a sucker play. Jonesboro is simply betting that sometime in the next 15 years the going rates will be lower than they are now, at which time they …
@LewisBraham-
Thanks very much. It took a lot of maneuvering, but evidently the only way to obtain the instructions is by using the iBooks app from the Apple Store. So I finally figured out how do do that, then used that app to download the instruc…
@Chinfist-
"I'm also wondering if it might be a better idea to put that money into bond funds rather than CDs or individual bonds, as, in addition to yield, you will make money if interest rates go down as the NAV of bond funds will move higher. "

Since there seems to be some interest in the subject, I'm going to repeat something here that I've said in a private message:
It's pretty much the same approach for CDs, bonds, or Treasuries. In an inflationary cycle such as the one we are now i…
@sfative- I chose to take the higher interest rate on that relatively short-term CD, betting that during that time frame rates will not be coming down much, if at all, and that the bank won't exercise the call option.
Bought CD today from Schwab: Morgan-Chase | 4.85 | 2/22/24 | FDIC | Callable.
Will keep checking every few days to capture steadily higher rates. Go Fed!
Joe Biden and a number of other leaders of Western democracies were very quick to publicly congratulate Brazil on a fair election, helping to put pressure on Bolsanaro to recognize the result. He may be a sore loser, but at least he ain't a Trump.
I was in the Coast Guard, and later as an air traffic controller had a bottom secret (BS) clearance with no add-ons. Having been married for over fifty years it's for sure that I can keep a secret or two. Any way for me to get in on this bonanza?

Brazil's Bolsonaro avoids conceding defeat, but begins transition to winner Lula
Following is a current report from NPR, slightly edited for brevity.
Almost two days after Sunday's vote, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro finally made his first sta…
As some of you know, there was an extensive special section in The Economist last week providing an in-depth analysis of the China situation generally, including some possible investment cautions and insights.
Yes, non-callable, especially on the longer notes, is very desirable.
@dtconroe- yes, your "other criteria" is covered by my "that works for you" clause. :)
Well, the analogy to new cars is interesting. I'd guess that any "product" that continually changes in original cost and of which there is an almost unlimited supply will always rapidly fluctuate in perceived value as the market moves up or down. Wh…
Just bought 4.75 matures 5/6/24. Ladder is beginning to look pretty good. Will keep checking every few days to capture steadily higher rates.
Agree with Sven & dtconroe.
With all respect to rono, I'm not sure how the navy would come into this since Turkey has blocked the Bosporus Strait to warships, preventing access to the Black Sea. Ukraine has no other maritime access.
