Here's a statement of the obvious: The opinions expressed here are those of the participants, not those of the Mutual Fund Observer. We cannot vouch for the accuracy or appropriateness of any of it, though we do encourage civility and good humor.
The last time I saw a pic like Powell staring into something was Gandalf looking into one of the seven palantir to try to discern the immediate future...
"But “chips” have fallen in price."
Yeah, except that nobody can get any.
That reminds me of a place that I once worked (wasting a good portion of my life):
Customer: How much is that part?
Clerk: (Quotes price)
Customer: That's outrageous! Your …
@hank- as I was saying... [The] "core" doesn't include food, housing, or transportation because they are "volatile", but then, who really needs those anyway?
If we leave out the expensive stuff then everything looks just fine...
"The dollar could depreciate sharply thereby making those “nominal” paper gains worth less in real purchasing power."
That's already happening... it's called "inflation", which our leaders would have you believe doesn't exist in the "core", whateve…
The following excerpts are from a current column by Paul Krugman, in The New York Times: "Is China in Big Trouble?"
(That link will only work for NYT subscribers.)
China’s economic growth has been gradually slowing. Here’s a five-year moving averag…
With respect to the general "Green" topic, I've just posted an interesting WSJ article on climate warming in the "Off Topic" section:

For non-subscribers, it's a free read.
@BenWP- Likely because some posts, like rono's (above) say "@Ben" rather than "@BenWP". We older folks sometimes are a little sloppy on stuff like that. For instance, rono also referenced me as "@OldJoe", and I received no notification, because it s…
I greatly admired Colin Powell, and have always thought that he took an unfair hit on the United Nations presentation on Iraq's supposed WMD arsenal.
General Powell didn't invent that false information on his own- he was reporting what he believed …
"thx Old_Joe advise"
For the record, Old Joe did no such thing, and never would attempt to "advise" anyone on financial matters. At 82 with very decent pension & SS income we are much more concerned with financial stability rather than increase…
The Great Resignation Is Accelerating
In April, the number of workers who quit their job in a single month broke an all-time U.S. record. Economists called it the “Great Resignation.”
Here's a current article from The Atlantic which explores this to…
@Derf- No sir- There were no strike actions during my time as steward. I was mostly involved in representing employees in bureaucratic disciplinary or contractual proceedings, with a pretty darned good win record.
OJ
@rono- My man!!! I've been looking and waiting for at least six months for the professional pundits to finally ask the question/make the connection: "All around us, not only in the US, but overseas as well, we're witnessing (and participating in) a …
OK, with a search I did find the following info from Ameritrade. It apparently deals with margin purchases, which I never even consider, so it's probably a logic "don't care".
Maintenance Requirements on Stock
How are Maintenance Requirements on a …
Yes, I was especially impressed by the empirical studies which determined virtually no negative side effects resulting from increases in minimum wage. But certain quarters are still spouting that nonsense, aren't they?
@Stillers- Derf is one of the most easy-going folks around here. If you're irritating him as well as hank maybe you should consider lowering your tone of voice.
I think that hank is on to something. You're eventually going to need someone on your side who is local to you, so why not get them involved from the beginning, rather than get something started only to find out that there may be pitfalls?
