Trump arrives where everyone else has been on the Ukraine war after only 3 1/2 years of cogitating

https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/23/in-major-shift-trump-says-he-now-thinks-ukraine-can-win-back-all-of-its-territory-taken-by-russia.html

Good news for Ukraine. Incredibly ignorant that it took the POTUS, with all available resources, nearly 4 years to arrive at this conclusion.

'“After getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia Military and Economic situation and, after seeing the Economic trouble it is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form,” Trump said'

Are you freaking kidding? It took him this long to "understand"?

Pretty obvious that Trump is a slow thinker. And it seems apparent that he is eyeing the income to our defense complex, when he says, 'the U.S. will continue to supply weapons to NATO “for NATO to do what they want with them.”'

I am with Zelensky on this, 'Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told reporters: “It’s a big shift. This post of Trump it’s a big shift. Very positive.” ' Now I wonder if EU NATO partners will begin to provide air support and/or advisors directly to Ukraine. Seems like something is about to happen.

  • It's pretty hard to pretend that Putin isn't seriously testing NATO responses to military aircraft incursions across a fairly broad geographical front. Anybody familiar with the runup to WW2?
  • I'm sure he is doing just that. But, I think he is about to get much busier with the Ukrainian incursion. He is already afraid to put his air power in jeopardy over Ukraine. If he cannot handle Ukraine air defenses alone, he will not like broader NATO air defenses in action.

The Russian war machine is floundering in Ukraine. Opening another front would be too much strain. Last thing that Putin wants is a real military power with a good reason to launch counter-attacks on Russian soil.

  • @DrVenture-
I certainly hope so. But why all the military bluster in places other than Ukraine at this time?

  • if anything, trump may have realized russia will not win, and is signaling putin that bribes must continue to be massive in order to associate with (another) loser.
let's see how MAGA sanewashes latest flop...easiest fallbacks are 'am not really paying attention'.

ukraine should not rely on america for anything, because actual damage against putin has not happened via trump in a decade, and counting.
(and with no concept of irony, trump admonished the UN that talk is cheap in war...plus much more demented nonsense that has the world laughing)

Just guessing here, but he may not have thought that Trump would finally turn on him and (weakly) support Ukraine via NATO arms sales with no limitations. This is the important part - no more limitations. Making his incursions tests of Trump (on NATO), rather than tests of EU NATO allies. I emphasize that is a WAG.

IRT "not paying attention", I have to chuckle. I have heard it so many times when pushing back on some sort of ignorant talk - "I don't really follow < insert topic here >". Always after offering some uninformed opinion.
