  • That's clever. I wish I could come up with such long-term schemes. So, Japan invests in keeping the US deeply involved with old dying enterprises while they, themselves, develop an increasing lead in new technologies. That $36B investment might turn out to be the most profitable Japan has made yet.
  • Pledging and actually handing over the funds are two different things I believe. Doesn't the US have many such agreements with China with nary a 2.5% copper penny to show for it?
  • Ya, yer both right!

Ask S Koreans about it. Something got lost in communications or translations, so, when the US Administration asked S Korea to handover $350 billion in cash, they were surprised hugely. They said that was impossible and are reviewing trade deal notes to figure out what was actually said.

There is also threat to reverse the trade deal with S Korean tariffs reverting to 25% because S Korea is taking too long to approve the trade deal. But they have to first understand what the deal was/is.
