I've watched many documentaries over the years about this period. Wholly sad and amazing as to the will of good by so many; military and civilian. My father was in the Pacific area of WWII.

This article bears a 2025 date, but I know for a fact the book itself which is referenced was written during Orange's first term:
General Dwight Eisenhower wrote a letter a night before launching Operation Overlord. There he wrote that the failure of D-day is all his that he bears the full responsibility for thousands of young lives sacrificed on the Normalcy invasion. The letter was intended to deliver to President Roosevelt in case the invasion fails. Of course, D-day invasion was a great success for the allies. Within 6 months, Nazis Germany was defeated. This letter was never deliver to Roosevelt. https://archives.gov/files/education/lessons/d-day-message/
Can you name one general or politician who has the as same courage as Eisenhower?
Yes. McCain. And look at the marvelous work Cindy is doing these days! Actor Tom Selleck and I are mostly not on the same page, politically. But his portrayal of Eisenhower was splendid in the film, "Ike: Countdown to D-Day." The story ends with the Normandy invasion. The referenced letter in @Sven's post, above, was recited in the film. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401504/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_in_0_q_Ike%3A%20Countdown
Saving Private Ryan , and Bands of Brothers are so of the best films depicting the sacrifices of our young soldiers provided so that democracy would survive. .
A 2017 visit to the beaches at Normandy revealed an astonishing, to me, pro-American attitude among the French. True gratitude for us and the Brits, Canadians, et al. I have spent long periods of time in France and can attest that this positive attitude is not nationwide. Quite frankly, I’m not sure what I might find on my next visit to France.

Yes, the former senator John McCain has my vote.
