Heads up for Citi Double Cash Card users

This popular 2% cash back card has some weird issues now. I have been paying the balance every month on my checking account bill pay for years. Gets paid electronically and never an issue. This month the payment didn’t arrive at Citi and very long story short my bank sent a paper check instead of the electronic pay system. Of course the paper check got lost. Turns out Citi is not accepting electronic payments from other banks. It took two days of grinding calls with morons in customer service at my bank, Fiserve and finally an escalation at Citi …. So if you are willing to pay by snail mail pay early and pray it gets there.

  • Seems they want to use your money for a few extra days every month. Times how many account holders equals more profit for them!
  • I thought my bank was the culprit for the reason you suggested @Derf. But it was Citi who told my bank and apparently others it’s strictly paper checks. The schmuck I spoke to at Citi said they have some “issues “ they have to resolve. My bank never notified me of the change and now my payment is a check in the mail. Somewhere.
  • My online/ACH Bill Pays for Citi Card are still going through. The Bill Pay doesn't even ask for address for a credit card setup. So, if an electronic link fails/denied, I don't know which address it will use.
But I will start monitoring Citi Card payments.
I typically enter Bill Pay about 10 days ahead of the due date.
  • At YBB. If the payment would have arrived in a timely manner I would have never known it was a paper check via USPS.
  • I dropped the double cash card years ago but use the Citibank Custom Cash card. Like Yogi, I've had no problems making payments using Bill Pay. And I too have not provided a postal address.

If Citi is really not accepting electronic payments (does it refuse payroll direct deposits also?), then all Citibank card holders - Costco cards, American Airlines, LL Bean, etc. - need to be vigilant.

We have just plain Citibank credit cards, and they accept ACH payment for many years. We generally pay in full two weeks ahead of the due date. June’s Citi Visa bill was paid and confirmed via ACH on the same day.

We avoid CC with special rewards (mileages, points, and etc) since they seem to full of gimmick. Not sure why this particular Citibank CC is operating this way. We will be careful.

I've paid the balance for my Citi Costco Visa using Bill Pay on 6/25.
    No issues.
  • I paid mine on 6/30. It hasn’t arrived yet and after much questioning I found out this is a new policy. The previous month went through electronically. My info came from Citi directly.
  • Oh, dear..... Scary. And my wife just acquired the Costco co-branded Citi VISA card to replace the Discover Card she had, because they are now under the Capital One umbrella. The plan is to cancel Discover.
  • @Crash "The plan is to cancel Discover. "
Will this cancellation not cause credit rating to drop? Maybe you don't care?
    How was your trip?

    Howdy!
Her credit rating is already "exceptional." Over 800. I wonder how much damage it might do to cancel Discover?

The trip was a success, despite all circumstances. We just punted and dealt with the crap. Nothing can beat a view of the Canadian Rockies. We reached Calgary the day before the Stampede was to start. Nowhere to put the car. We drove around to see the city through the car window, then headed south and east back to home base in Cranbrook, B.C. When we got there, rooms were more readily available. The Canada Day rush was over. We missed the Prime Minister by a day over in Calgary. He was busy flipping pancakes to open the festivities.
  • @Crash Good to hear you had a safe trip.

    I double-checked today, 7/11/25.
My credit union Bill Pay scheduled for 7/2/25 was received by Citi card (website a/c info) on 7/2/25 itself as an electronic payment.
But I will watch this & may move Citi payments even earlier than 10 days from the due date.
I would think that Citi would provide notification of a change like this.
  • At YBB. something is going on recently at Citi card. I checked my bill pay at SchwabBank and tried to do a bill pay for the very same Citicard. Schwab bank advised it would be by check and could take longer than projected to get to biller. To prevent my account being past due I did a minimum payment through the Citi card app and it went through and was credited immediately.
  • At YBB. Apparently Citi told Fiserv, which handles bill pay for many banks including mine. My bank provided no notification. My secondary bank, which is Schwab bank did advise me that a payment to Citi would be by check. When asked and escalated Citi told me this is a new situation and temporary but who knows?
