"President Trump said he would deploy National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., and place the city’s police department under federal control, launching an unprecedented effort to take charge of the nation’s capital."
"The president compared the homicide rate in Washington with capitals around the world, including Baghdad and Bogotá, Colombia. Violent crime in the city was down 35% last year from 2023, Justice Department data show, the lowest in more than 30 years. The data showed a decline in homicides, robberies, armed carjackings and assaults with a dangerous weapon."
"Under the Home Rule Act, which established the district’s governing body, Congress has the power to challenge laws passed by the Washington city council and must approve the budget, although it rarely gets involved. The president can deploy the district’s National Guard, but has limited ability to intervene in day-to-day matters."
"Trump invoked Section 740 of the Home Rule Act, which allows the president to federalize the D.C. police when 'special conditions of an emergency nature exist.' Under the law, the president can federalize D.C. police for no more than 48 hours unless he notifies Congress that more time is needed. Trump said he planned to notify lawmakers about his plans."
This quasi-crime increase must be rforno creating massive good trouble. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see the guard at all demonstrations opposing this administration and/or its policies. Otherwise the DC police will be expected to handle it.
But he’s promised to “get rid of homelessness” in the city and also to get rid of the slums. A worthy goal. Who wouldn’t wan’t that? If he can help these poor souls obtain better housing / living standards, I might become a MAGA believer.
We got all the federal agencies out letting people know that they cannot be smoking or drinking on their own doorsteps. Thank goodness that they are dealing with that crisis. I feel safer already! Hoping that they put the hurt on the jaywalkers next. And the litterers.
Even if these guys were smoking weed, it is not illegal in D.C. to consume marijuana on private property. A building's front porch is generally considered private property, specifically part of the home's curtilage, which is afforded Fourth Amendment protections. A citizen of D.C. could also smoke in their backyard, which is "outside". These guys do not know the D.C. law or The Constitution.
How would Jan. 6, 2021 been different if the Wash. DC police dept. had been operating under federal control and the national guard were already deployed by the president?
@Poptart wondered: "How would Jan. 6, 2021 been different if the Wash. DC police dept. had been operating under federal control and the national guard were already deployed by the president?"
Well, that's an interesting mental exercise. I would guess that instead of having to fight to gain entry to Congress Trump would have his police and National Guard sell entry tickets (all proceeds to Trump, of course), and maps of where all of the various congressional offices are located to allow easier access to terrify any non-Trumpian members of congress and ransack their offices.
